Re: Okay, NOW Wind will definitely be foreign owned

i really don't see that happening.
with the way things are looking now wind is in a position to buy up the other smaller guys. they already have 600k subs.
the only time they would sell is if they are not gaining anything in market right now. but as long as they continue to grow each quarter there is no reason to sell.
they just had their best quarter and their sub base size has grown by more then 50% in the last year. now they are going for full control.
i would say this is more of a strategic move to deepen their pockets for some ammunition against the incumbents. i mean this is the same company who had their CEO say "We will make pain, and they will suffer" in a live interview. that sounds more like they want payback for what happened when they opened doors rather then them wanting to sell.

Orascom will sell. It will cost too much to upgrade their network to be on par with Bell/Rogers/Telus' offerings. Wind's home network zone is still very small and a lack of LTE will begin to hurt them soon, if it's not hurting them now.

I would be curious to know how they did over Christmas. I certainly heard of quite a few people sign up for them. They have only been here in London for just over a year. There are many people waiting out their 3 year contracts planning on switching.

If only Wind was able to get some spectrum so that they could offer iPhones they would bet set. It is the one thing that seems to be impeding quite a few people I know.

I have a hard time believing they would sell. They knew from the beginning it would take a lot of money to build out the infrastructure to compete with Rogers / Bell / Telus.

You can't become Bell/Rogers/Telus overnight, it'll take decades and billions to build an infrastructure to effectively compete with those three.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

Very few people are getting service from the big 3 *just* because they have LTE. Wind's cell sites are fairly easily upgraded to LTE - it just doesn't make sense to do so now. Perhaps in a couple of years people would leave a carrier that doesn't have LTE then, but not so much now.

While Wind's network coverage is relatively small, they do cover a large percentage of Canada's urban population, and a decent portion of the most heavily traveled routes. Wind has been pretty good about expanding coverage (slowly) and filling in gaps in areas that need work. But there is no question that some areas still need work, ie. some I know of are 401 east of Guelph has a Wind dead zone, as does 420 half-way between Niagara Falls and Ft. Erie.

The upcoming 700Mhz auction will make an iPhone available for them very shortly... they'll basically have both the iPhone and LTE in one fell swoop.

Once this happens we'll be able to speculate a little more about Wind's (and the other new entrants) long term viability.

To which, full foreign ownership was the only way they would ever have been able to afford to get 700MHz spectrum.

i hear bell canada and rogers are behind scenes looking at a divide up so they can get quicker approval of that. THEN its back to rip off time. JUST like a fido....

Fair enough but the auction is set up in such a way that you can't snap up the entire spectrum for any region you're bidding in. This should keep bids, and the prices low seeing as you only get a fixed amount of spectrum no matter how much you bid.

No company bought the entire AWS spectrum in any region. And I don't think it was allowed either.

Putting too much rules isn't always a good idea either. We must not repeat the mistake which made Shaw and Eastlink to buy spectrum but not using it.

Videotron did buy all 40MHz of the new entrant spectrum in Quebec, though. No one else did that. Videotron may as well be part of the Big 3 (or rather, 4), though.

Eastlink is in the process of building their wireless network right now. It was supposed to launch in PEI and NS in 2012 but it's been delayed for whatever reason.

It was allowed, case and point being Videotron in Quebec as noted earlier.

I agree; spectrum squatting shouldn't be allowed: use it or lose it, no refunds.

I think the current auction is set up as such as well but I can't confirm that for sure.

Videotron bought the spectrum for new entrants (which they got for cheap in many cases, because Wind and Mobilicity didn't bet much) but it was only part of the available spectrum. I don't think they were allowed to buy the whole spectrum.

That's hard to implement in practice. Should Wind loose 90% of its spectrum since it's not being used?

Wind is using it's spectrum and is in a process of perpetual expansion, no one can argue that. I've been with them since day so I'm witnessing it, the real question is what's an acceptable timetable for expansion?

Wind is in BC, AB, virtually all of Southern Ontario, and this is within 3 years, so the proof's in the pudding as far as I'm concerned.

Wind is supposedly in the midst of a Halifax build now. Has anyone with a Wind phone seen flickers of testing of that on their handsets when out there?

Winnipeg too. No official word on either yet, but some Wind towers have been confirmed in Winnipeg.

Wind is nototrious for activating service without making any official announcements, I was getting service in Barrie for at least 3 months before Wind even acknowleged that they were active there.
