MSN Voice working with LinkSys BEFRS41

Hi Everyone!

I was mucking about today and I decided to try and get the voice feature working with MSN behind my LinkSys. I checked into DSLReports and found that it seemed that no-one could do it.

I'm wondering now if that's really the case. Mine's up and running on MSN 4.6.0076 on Windows 2000 behind the BEFRS41. I'm running the 1.42.4 firmware and a test at GRC shows that all my ports are still in stealth mode.

If everyone is having a problem I can post up the details if there's demand. As I said, I'm not sure, maybe it people running a different O/S that had the problem?

I am in the market for a router and want to get one which I can use IM voice and make internet phone calls on as well as use a webcam. Which of the popular routers can I use, or not use? =Tom=

You'll need one that is UPnP Compliant for use with MSN (Voice/Video).

Linksys BEFSR11/41
Linksys BEFSR41W

D-Link DI-804

These are all UPnP compliant routers. There may be other models out there, those are the ones I know about.

Thanks for the tip, Oh Great One.

If anyone knows of any other routers I may also consider, please let me know.

By the way, what does UPnP mean? Also, is there a place on this site that defines all the other acronyms and abbreviations I've been reading and don't understand? =TB=

Here's what I did

First, I'm running Windows 2000 & MSN version 4.6.0076
Second, I'm running the latest firmware for the BEFSR41 - 1.42.4

You can get it from my site at »members.shaw.ca/MarvinMiller/index.htm

#1 - I went to this screen & confirmed that 1.42.4 was installed

#2 - I went to this screen & hit the radio button for Restore Factory Defaults and hit Apply

#3 - I then confirmed that my Filters looked like this;

#4 - I then did a PortScan Test to re-check security

After that I called up a friend. I'm running cable & he's on ADSl. He's also running Windows 2000 with a BEFSR41. He flashed his router and we had a conversation

Best & Hope This Helps;

Thanks Marvin. I'll try this when I get home. I tried a voice conversation with my sister last night, she has XP, and I could hear her fine, but she couldn't hear me at all. I'll post back tomorrow if I have the same luck as you.
Regards,
Phil

Hi;

Have you tried this solution with Win98? I don't see any reason why yours should be different. The communication either makes it through the router or not.
O/S shouldn't make a difference.

Do you have to run a different version of messenger because your on 98?

  I also had the same problem with Windows XP/Linksys BEFRS41. I upgraded my firmware to 1.42.6 and MSN voice was working fine. My other problem, I use MSN messenger to make PC to Phone with DialPad. The message I'm getting now with router (your network is configured such that you cannot make phone calls (NAT situation with the Linksys). Went to Windows update and downloaded a new driver(Windows Messenger Audio update). Now all is working fine.

Can you get remote assistance to work with XP and MSN Messenger with the 1.42.4 firmware without having to open port 3389 in the router?

Thanks

Did you follow the steps listed above - one by one - or did you just flash it?
