Airline flight - dispute CC charge?

Ok, so I was supposed to fly to New Orleans for Mardi Gras but my flight was cancelled due to this nasty storm in the Northeast.

When I booked my ticket originally (one way since I'm driving back with people I know who are already there), it was $275 to fly in the morning, or $225 to fly at night.

I paid $275 since I wanted to fly in the morning and spend the day there. That ticket is now cancelled, and I was bumped to the night flight. They said they cannot refund me the $50 difference.

Had I known there would have been a storm, I would have gotten the night flight, saved $50, and not have been re-booked.

If I dispute my Amex CC charge for $50, will they likely rule in favor of me?

I also purchased the ticket directly through the airline's website, since it was cheaper than any travel website (ie. Travelocity, Expedia, etc.). The airline was rude to me today on the phone since they seemed peeved at their "higher than normal call volume" due to the storm.

It's not a Regulation E claim, Amex would just be issuing a credit. If I were them I wouldn't give it to you.

The airline is obligated to get you there. You're lucky that they just don't give you a full refund and let you figure it out.

You shouldn't dispute the charge. Look at the fine print for your ticket purchase. It's probably considered an act of God. If they refunded you the $275 and told you to find your own way, you probably would spend more than $275 to get another flight on such short notice.

Someone here under similar circumstances got peeved at the airline, got a full refund, then ended up paying >$1000 for a new ticket on another airline.

Only one question needs answered ... Did you receive the product you were charged for?

Seems like you did, so ...

If you didn't buy the flight insurance, that's all on you.

You're likely to not get the $50 difference back.

But who knows? Sometimes it's worth it to complain to AMEX about these things. My suggestion would be to roll the dice and see what happens. The worst that can happen is that you wind up not getting the refund, in which case you're no worse off than you are now.

I highly doubt you would be able to get any sort of refund from the airline. However, depending on what kind of insurance or travel services that are included on your Amex you might be able to get something out of that but probably highly unlikely.

Considering the storm in the NE and booked flights for mardi gras, I'd say your lucky you got rescheduled for the same day.

I can see your point...really though, how much kicking and scratching are you willing to to do for fifty bucks?

I'm not the most experienced traveller in the world, but it's my understanding that when a flight is cancelled you have the option of a full refund (after which you are totally on your own), or they can offer you an alternate flight (which may not be as good a deal as what you signed up for).

By accepting the night flight, you agreed to the deal as-is. I'm not sure you have a leg to stand on; if $50 means that much to you then go for it.

Personally, I would blow it off and file this one under "shit happens". YMMV.
