DSL 7.1-15Mbps Line Quality

Hello,

Verizon is telling me I can't get the 7.1 - 15 Mbps package at my address, but a friend of mine right up the road was able to get 15 Mbps no problem on a Dry Loop. Below are my current line stats on my modem, and I was just wondering if they are good enough for at least 10Mbps. Also I just bought a POTS Splitter which I plan on installing tomorrow after work. Thanks.

It's possible they don't have any available ports for that tier. If you're served out of the same CO as your friend their allotment of ports supporting it may have been exhausted. It's also possible that they might have withdrawn it if there wasn't enough customer interest. And, if you have the package but can't get the actual speed there could be other limiting factors affecting your line and the signal stats you're seeing are the best possible based on what you sync at.

I've have 7.1-15 (actual is about 10-12) for several years now. My stats:

Transceiver Statistics

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: ADSL2+ Mode
Data Path: Interleaved

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 14950 944
Margin (dB) 6.0 10.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 26.0 13.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 17.4 11.8

I can't get fastpath because my CO apparently didn't get the option enabled for the tier...but the speed's decent and I haven't had any issues.

Ah. That is probably what it is, so I'll just have to wait I guess. On a side note... I'm trying to use DMT to adjust my SNR margin (lower it) on my modem, but the modem just resets and syncs @ 13 SNR again no matter what I set it to :-/.

Thanks

first off, you do NOT want to lower your snr margin, you want it to go up, not down! i would recommend setting dmt back to default.

getting past that, unless you notice a major jump in line stats (margin going UP) by plugging it into the nid, you aren't going to be able to get anything faster than what you have now.

some info to help you out:

[dsl line stats guide - DFA version]
snr guide:
<6db: not good
6-12dB: marginal, should get line checked, but if it works, it works
13-20dB: good
21-30dB: great
>30dB: excellent

attenuation guide:
>70dB: no dsl
69-60dB: lowest tier dsl
59-50dB: good for up to 5Mbps
49-40dB: good for up to 7Mbps
39-30dB: good for up to 10Mbps
29-20dB: good for up to 15Mbps
<20dB: you can get whatever you want, usually

power guide:
0-8dBm: great
9-14dBm: fair
15-19dBm: poor
>19dBm: maxed out, not usually a good thing

Thanks for the info Demonfang.

I installed a POTS/DSL Splitter outside over the weekend. My stats went up slightly and I discovered two phone lines in our house that were shorted out. I investigated further and found a lot of water and slime(Slug Slime?) on the wires in the NID. Verizon is sending someone out to swap the NID for a new box. The box has Bell Atlantic written on it, and it hasn't been updated since we've lived here (1996). Hopefully a new box and wires will help with our line quality.

Here are the new stats after the splitter. I'm also trying to get Verizon to switch me over to ADSL2/2+ if its available, and maybe that will help with the Output Power (dBm).
