Re: Callcentric in Canada using a softphone: Is it OK?

Regarding the difficulty of getting local numbers for people not living in major cities: Have any of you considered trying to port your local number to a VOIP company? Sure there is a cost, but if its going to a free service like Fongo, its got to be worth it. Or do they only port numbers in the same area as they also dispense numbers?

Here you can check if you can get a phone number local to you.
To check if you can port your number to FPL go to this link to see how to.

That was interesting. At first it looks like you can port any number but then you look at the end of the form and they have a selection of Provinces and they just happen to be the exact ones that also available when you select your initial number.

So much for that little theory. Or maybe other companies are more flexible.

To lower costs one could add a smart ring number for a few bucks on to the phone account just for as long as the transfer took if you were keeping the main number.
