How many fansHow many fans do you have installed in your build? I have 1x heat sink fan and 1x side case fan. |

I was going to write a long essay on the pros, cons, and reasons for peoples' fan choices... but it's the weekend.
The one I'm typing on right now has PSU fan, rear case exhaust, CPU, video card, and a front intake fan before the HDD rack.
The latter I don't really need but adds some redundancy should the rear case fan fail and since the case has a filtered front intake, having a fan in front right behind the filter panel reduces the dust drawn in through tiny nooks and crannies elsewhere on the case. |

I thought all PSUs come with the back, and the side fan, unless i am missing something here. |

Back AND side fan? Generally speaking, only low end generic PSU have both a rear and a side (bottom) fan, or only a rear fan has been common in past years, especially on workstation or server PSU. While most PSU do have at least one fan, there are some passive models which I usually advise against, but those, or with careful attention to system airflow an overspec'd PSU can also be ran passively, in a low powered system that has a case fan. This latter scenario is a special situation, for example a HTPC were the whole system may only use 40W and there's a tiny, relatively high RPM PSU fan that creates too much noise. The generic answer is don't disable a fan in the PSU if it has one, but it is possible to make a system work ok with it unplugged if you keep in mind all the factors necessary to keep everything cool enough. It's also likely to reduce PSU lifespan if it isn't a pretty high quality unit. Maybe I just got bored building standard ATX systems and am mentioning things nobody else will encounter. |

OMFG!! I guess 'fan fetish' is one of the new übergeek addictions Lately, I'm too lazy/cheap to do my own builds since nothing can beat used Dells ( ) but I have 4 + 1 computers in my room (the +1 is my router, an old K6 Compaq Presario), and here's the fan count of those: Router: 1 fan total (really!!) GX280 MT: 3 fans total: 1 PS, 1 video, 1 CPU & case combined GX745 MT: 2 fans total: 1 PS, 1 CPU & case combined (add in video card is currently removed for re-lubrication, otherwise it would be 1 more) GX755 SFF: 2 fans total: 1 PS, 1 CPU & case combined (video card is fanless) Precision 380: 4 fans total: 1 PS, 1 front case, 1 video, 1 CPU -------------------------------------------------------------------- total is 12 fans in 5 systems; average: 2.4 fans/system!! |

While my HP MediaSmart EX490 Windows Home Server (v1 PP3) was down I stepped up my plans for a backup server running Windows Server 2012 Essentials, which, is still in progress but online with 4x 3TB HDD and one 2TB HDD (with more to be added / 1x 4TB HDD + 1x 3TB HDD all using Storage Spaces / Storage Pool).
Fans right now are:
2x 120mm front (going to add one more) 1x 120mm rear 1x 140mm top
This is in an Antec 300 case with Antec Tri-Cool fans. Since its going to be a storage server I removed the optical drive so I can use all the SATA connection for HDDs. Then I modified the 5.25" bay covers to allow airflow when I mount the third fron 120mm fan using a 5.25" to 3.5" HDD cage.
Edit
1x 120mm HSF combo (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus)
