| reply to rickyfk Even if you own one, you can't use it. Some DSL providers, such as Velcom will either sell or rent you a modem. If you buy it and switch to another provider, you will be forced to buy or rent another. Bell Canada will not allow them to provide VSDL service without also providing the modem. It is in their contracts. So the only reason to buy one is if you want a standby modem in case your service provided modem failed. |

The main reason people replace the Samgemcom modems is because they are fairly locked down and have a bunch of quirks that intermediate to advanced users find quite annoying. -- Opinions expressed are my own, and may or may not reflect those of my employers or any other BCE company or division. |

2 edits | If you have 25/10 service:
You don't need to replace the modem. Just configure your router with the PPPoE information, and it will login directly. Older versions of the modems firmware had the problem that they worked at half speed for pass through PPPoE, but that has long since been resolved. |

However, if you do run into problems, just replace the username in the modem with something bogus, so only your router is connected over PPPoE. Don't know what you're talking about. I had the, the update to date firmware and it only gave me 35mbps speed. If you don't have info, I suggest to not talk about it.
Seriously get up to date before you spread any info. |

the modem is also pretty junky and dies with a lot of traffic. |

| reply to kovy I'm not sure if the slow bridge issue was introduced with new firmware, but if somebody knows how to flash firmware on the Sagem's and wants to try an old version, this is the file that shipped on the modems last Spring: FAST2864_v76396.img.secure (8.9 MB) |

1 edit | reply to kovy I have 25/10 service. So I would have no way to measure what happens beyond that. I imagine most users still have 25/7 or 25/10, possibly with Fibe TV. As Bell introduces faster speeds, those using them will face new challenges. If you are buying your own modem, it may or may not work for those enhanced services. Just as even if your alternative brand modem works with Bell today, since there is no support from Bell, you have no way of knowing Bell will not change something that locks out your modem in the future. To me, using an alternative modem sounds like a big crap shoot. |

The only reason why I would use a Sagemcom is if I didn't have any other option.
With a 60$ alternative modem, I think it's well worth it. I don't see how Bell could lock this up. Did Bell lock out any ADSL modem ? |

No it is perfectly valid information, and I don't appreciate you saying otherwise. Last January, PPPoE gave me half speed. About 12 Mbps. At that time deactivating the modem login allowed full speed. Later a firmware update fixed it, so I could get full speed without disabling the login. The problem is there is an unstated assumption of what "full speed" means. For me it is 25 Mbps. For you it is 50 Mbps. I can't say what it will be in the future. I would be curious to find out though if for the 50 Mbps if disabling the login on the modem is still a viable workaround. I wish I could test that for you. There's no disabling the login in the modem. Again more false information. The modem will authenticate itself with the sagemcom default ID.
Don't need to test, I already know everything about it... hence why I got another modem. |

You don't reset it to the default username. You set to a username or password that gives authentification error. As I said I have no idea if this would still work with the current firmware. Obviously neither do you, as you don't even realize it used to be needed to do. (I didn't discover this trick on my own, someone else shared it to me as a comment on my review.) Since you don't really know it all, lets just shut this discussion down now... This thread is aiding no one.
