Ooma

Anyone use ooma? is it any good? According to their website is says it'll just cost me $4.77 a month in fees and taxes.
I'd love to drop Charter phone if this device works good.

Ooma users in this forum seem to be pretty happy. The main concern that people have is the sustainability of their business model.

You may also want to visit the »/gbu to compare it to other VoIP providers.

We've been hearing that concern for many years here. Yet anyone who signed up while people were voicing concern about it, have had their return on investment repaid many times over. All the while experiencing comparably very good service.

True. But just because we have been hearing that concern for many years does not mean that it is unfounded.

Their business model still depends on acquiring new customers for revenue.

May be a silly question, but you [are] aware that you have to buy the device?

Also, some basic VoIP features (notably Caller ID Name) are only available in their Premiere service which costs more.

If you are a light user, you might do better with PAYG plans from FutureNine, CallCentric, Voip.MS, Anveo, or others. Note that some of those providers you choose inbound and outbound plans separately.

Consider Voipo as well.

Two years of Voipo for upfront payment of 185 including all taxes and fees, and including the phone adapter.

By contrast, two years of Ooma will run 264 (that's 150 for their cheapest Ooma Telo plus 114 in monthly fees).

If Ooma lasts more than another 2 years, and assuming the North Koreans don't get us, you might indeed do better with Ooma for the long term. OTOH if Ooma's business model fails then you are left with a brick.

You might also consider NetTalk.

Quality probably not quite as good, but a much lower initial investment than Ooma....

I have been using the Ooma Hub for a few years- few problems have been noted. As indicated, some features don't work without paying for Premium service, but I can live without these functions.

I have no experience with the Telo (which is what they are presently selling), but I would expect it to also work very well.

That said, they announced recently that they are no longer going to provide support for the Hub; nothing has been stated, but I suppose it is possible that they will ban all of the remaining Hubs from their network at some point. Plus, it is always possible that they might implode (like Sunrocket), especially if their recently-announced business equipment turns out to be not as successful in the marketplace as was expected. With this in mind, I have set up some VOIP equipment as a backup (so I won't be in the lurch if Ooma suddenly becomes unavailable to me). Right now, I am using IdeaSIP (without their IdeaOUT account), so I can only call in-network and to toll-free U.S. numbers, but this is sufficient to test the equipment. If something happens to Ooma, I can select a provider and change my configuration quickly, so that I will be able to call "regular" landline phones.

Have had Ooma as our second line for over a year now. Originally the service was good, now they seem to have improved it a bit. Impossible to tell the different between it and a POTS line now. (ignoring the annoying dial tone, which you can change to a normal one now)

Just have the free service, don't know about everyone else but we DO still have CNAM lookup. It never went away.

Overall very happy with it. Great if you want something that "just works"

Thank you everyone for your replies.
Before I do anything I will look into the other services posted in this thread.
My only need is to have a good clear connection, I don't need caller I.D. or any of the other features as I rarely recieve calls.

As for the North Koreans, I doubt they would waste their bombs on my town .

How do you change the dial tone? I must have missed that one.

From Ooma forums, hope this works:

To enable non-Ooma dialtone on Telo or Linx log into MyOoma and under Preferences | Phone numbers

Click on 'Setup Device'.

Select the appropriate Type and then for mode select Fax.

All this will do is change the dialtone. The codec is only changed when a fax tone is detected.

....stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder....

Disclaimer:

Someone NOT from this VoIP forum called me a "mentally irregular wacko Canadian loon and flamer".

For the record, I am [not] Canadian, although there's nothing wrong with that.... Some of my best friends are Canadians.

Re: Ooma

If I understand this correctly, changing the dial tone is not possible with the Hub.

I believe that is the case, although I am not an Oomerite.

-----

Funny coincidence:

a) Ooma started as a peer-to-peer network.

b) A well-known 1951 SF story [OOM by Martin Gardner] begins:

Cautiously peered Oom over the rim of the Milky Way and focused his upper eye on an atomic cloud.

As it mushroomed slowly from the surface of the Earth, tears dripped from Oom's upper eye....

Is this where the Ooma name for a peering network originated?

The last sentence in that quote says that the codec doesn't change when you set the Telo to fax mode, I think that may not be the case. When I changed ours to fax mode I think it may have switched from the default G.722 to G.711. I notice the sound of the ringback being a little clearer, and DTMF tones go through with more ease when navigating automated systems.

There are other reasons why I think it uses G.711 when in fax mode but those are the main ones.
