| Very slow speed on my network, need help Hello, I really don't know a whole lot about networking, but here is my situation. I have an IFITL connection in my room and I want to have that internet connection networked wirelessly so the computer downstairs can use it. I have a Linksys BEFWS114 (somethin like that, 4 port wireless AP). My DSL/IFITL comes into my wall, to router, and from router to my PC. The computer downstairs has the Instant Wireless PCI card in it. My router is operating correctly, and when I look at DHCP client tables in router settings, it recognizes my computer downstairs. The wireless network config utility on the CLIENT computer downstairs shows that it is receiving a very good to excellent signal from my computer, however, it can't even load a single website completely. It just goes very slow and gets a lot of packet loss. The client computer runs Windows ME, and mine, with the access point, runs Win 2k Pro/SP2. Prior to this network, the client computer was on a 56k dialup connection..I'm wondering if maybe some windows settings need to be tweaked to allow fast data transfer or if Windows ME is even a problem. I just really don't know a lot about this stuff, and I'm tryin to find an easy way to test some things and maybe figure out where the problem lies. Thanks | |

You have a few variables here, so lets work on them one at a time: First: did you run the tests from this site on your system? doe it work slow when you transfer files within the network ( from one PC to the other) of is this just a WAN problem? from your post it seems that your LAN is setup correct and running within the system limitations. Second i would run the tests on your second PC it might need a few changes to bring it up to speed. it will not however be at the same speed as your other one but should be close | |

| Hey guys thanks for the replies...I left out some details, still haven't solved the problem. When I try to load a site like google or yahoo or anything, it won't even fully load. The connection just sits there without transmitting or receiving data most of the time, but occasionally it will get 30k/sec or so throughput for a fraction of a second and load part of the website. It never completely finishes loading the page though, therefore, I can't even get to the TweakTester section of this site. It looks like there is a whole bunch of packet loss or something. If I ping the computer downstairs, from mine, (ping -t 192.168.1.101) the ping is perfectly fine, too. Any more help would be appreciated 
UPDATE: I tried moving the problem computer up here so it was just feet away from the AP .. The connection quality and signal strength were a strong 100% up here, as opposed to 60-70% downstairs, but I had the exact same problem with very slow and very unreliable connection to the internet. I also tried running an FTP on the LAN and connecting from the computer, it didn't work either. So the problem is not only WAN, but we can't send files over the LAN either. Try pinging yahoo or google (e.g. ping -t www.yahoo.com). If it works then try again and again. Post the results.
Not sure what you meant by running FTP on LAN. Do you have an FTP server running on the LAN? If so then did you try connecting from one LAN computer to the other? | |

| Re: Very slow speed on my network, need help When I ping a regular website like google, the ping time fluctuates between like 69 and 83, and about every 6th to 7th ping times out. Judging by the results from pinging the site, it seems like it should be able to load properly at least, but it is VERY rare that it will actually be able to finish loading www.google.com. Maybe it could be a DNS problem, because that's one of the only things I don't really know about and haven't messed with. All the DNS options for now are pretty much set to automatic/default. Information on that would be nice. Based on the tests that I've done (especially having the wireless card a few feet away from AP), I can only think that the router somehow isn't configured properly, or I just happened to get a bad piece of hardware. The wireless card did not work properly in either PC I tested it in, despite having a 100% signal strength/quality. It, and the router are both made by Linksys, though, so I think I am going to call their tech support and see if they have anything useful to tell me. Thanks again Oh yeah about the FTP site on the LAN. I ran a temporary FTP site on this computer to test...and I tried to connect to it (LAN IP)from the PC with the wireless card in it. Anyways, we just ran a cable to network the PCs finally But still going to try to get a card for my laptop and then I'll start trying to fix the problem again. I actually wouldn't be surprised if it was my cordless phone..hmm, I dunno. I read the frequencies the router uses, and it's different from the phone, but worth a shot anyways..thanks. | |

My 900 Mhz battery went dead after I install WLan. I have brought a new battery and it won't charge. May be it is time for me to replace a phone. I need to find out whether I can still buy a cordless phone without impacting my existing Wlan.

| I just ran into this problem and resolved it by updating the firmware in my Linksys wireless PCI card (a WMP11). This solved the problem completely. However, the wireless configuration utility keeps trying to reinstall the old firmware so I removed it from my startup group. | |

the new firmware fixed mine to... but on the reboot it reflashed it with the old version and got hung in the flash process so now I have a toasted PCI Wireless card.

| I have had a similar issue, the LAN connection as well as the DSL connection are painfully slow, 60bps. Thats 60... not 60k, was this as slow as you were experiencing? I also tried the firmware update but did not pay attention to whether or not it was being flashed with the old when re-booting. Talked to Linksys who suggested that the card was bad and after chasing around to replace got the same results. HELP, thanks. | |
