jhboricuaExMod 2000-01 join:2000-06-06 Minneapolis, MN | CBDTPA could negatively impact linux development? Just saw this article on Vans Hardware and it raises some concerns. It deals with the introduction of the CBDTPA (Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act) into the Senate and how it could affect among other things, linux and open source development. Opinions are welcome.

Re: CBDTPA could negatively impact linux developme If you want to change the laws it will cost. Between 1974-77 a congressman cost about $50,000. With inflation, the dollar amount has increased a bit. So why dont we start a DSLR-Buy-A-Congressman fund?

funny, but read this article to see exactly what it cost the entertainment industry to buy the senators who started this.

Re: CBDTPA could negatively impact linux development? This will probably not slow Linux development a great deal since it is an international thing. What it would mean is that the versions that U.S. citizens use would be older and dependant on some company to produce. Then again many people use Redhat and don't do any development on their own so for them they wouldn't see much impact other than the free downloads would stop. |

Re: CBDTPA could negatively impact linux developme Ah, "The Golden Rule" again. They've got the gold, so they made the rules, and SCREW everybody else. It's not about Copyright, it's not about Content Protection, it's about CONTROL. They want to control their media from cradle-to-grave. How come everytime the Copyright on Mickey Mouse is about to expire, the Disney lawyers manage to finagle another extension? Just another lawyerly perversion of the system, in exchange for 'contributions' to the scumbag politicos of your choice. You'd think Jack Valenti would have learned something from the VCR wars that went on, but noooooo....gotta keep those cash cows fatted up! Pardon me, I'm late for a round on the back-9 at Pebble Beach! drjim -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

Re: CBDTPA could negatively impact linux developme Unfortunately, Immigration laws in The Netherlands are quite strict, so that's not exactly a viable option. |
