| Stop Messenger from starting when visit websites!!
With XP, if you visit say hotmail.com, Windows Messenger starts up automatically, and wont close because "It is needed". Well, it is far from needed and here is how you can prevent it from being started when visiting those kind of web sites.
Fire up the registry editor, and go to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F3A614DC-ABE0-11d2-A441-00C04F795683} and delete the entire key! No reboot needed!
Cheers. -- If it doesn't work, kick it. |

| Note: Ctrl Alt Del and I are using Xp Pro, and it works perfectly. NO REBOOT NEEDED. However, as always, BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE DOING THIS!
This particular trick works VERY well . Now you can get your hotmail w/o MSN/Windows messenger loading up and intruding -- Everything AOL touches just plain sucks. End of Story! |

| reply to Ctrl Alt Del Now this pops an interesting question: would this work on a non-Xp OS with MSN messenger installed?
Anyone care to test this theory out? (I really don't wanna go back to 98SE ) -- Everything AOL touches just plain sucks. End of Story! |

For a minute there, I thought so as well, but it's waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down there. You'll have to let it scroll quite a bit, and be careful, as I almost passed it myself quote: will this also work for outlook express?
Why not give it a try? I haven't been able to test it extensively (I prefer Outlook XP), so it might work there as well -- Everything AOL touches just plain sucks. End of Story! |

| reply to Ctrl Alt Del I'm having a similar IM problem. Whenever I open Hotmail or Outlook Express, IM starts an install wizard, and errors because it can't find files on a local server. My IM works fine...this just happens when trying to use Hotmail or OE. This started after I upgraded IM to 4.6.077 a couple of weeks ago. I tried deleting the reg key above on a flier, hoping it would work, but alas..no such luck.
Any ideas from the DSLR braintrust? |

That fixed an even larger problem for me. You see I had gotten so tired of Messinger I renamed it. The only problem was when I went to Hotmail with my laptop it just locked up. Every time. I had to wait till I got home to check my mail. Right after trying this edit I went to check my mail and all is fine. Good Call! -- A thing worth doing is worth doing to excess |

| reply to Ctrl Alt Del Thank you CTRL-ALT-DEL! Every other Messenger option never worked because I use MSN. Luckily this one worked! I loaded up MSN and usually a slight delay and hourglass with Messenger loading. Then I had to right-click the tray icon and click Exit. Then I had to open the XP Task Manager to clear the process. It was time consuming, but this saves me that time. Thanks again! |
