| Best Data DSL Modem and Qwest.net service
I purchased a Best Data, (800E), DSL modem for my Qwest.net DSL account I set up a month ago. I did not want to pay $275 for the CISCO 678.
I'm using Windows XP. I believe I have everything set and configured right on the modem, (if anyine knows for sure how to set it up, I'd appreciate your insight).
In any case, I set up a "Network Bridge in XP" and a broadband connection in Internet Explorer. I cannot for the lif of me get this thing to connect! The lights flash, but it always fails to connect. I have verified my user ID and password with Qwest. They will not help beyond this since I do not have a CISCO 678... FYI... I am not using the Qwest/MSN deal....
Please help!!! |

| prolly in the wrong forum for this, but lets give it a go. do you just have the modem and a NIC? or do you have a true router? and why did you setup the "XP network bridge"?

| reply to looch2 Sorry, I couldn't figure out where to post this...
The equipment I purchased is a modem. It is connected to an ethernet connection in my PC.
Modem IP: 10.0.0.1 PC IP: 10.0.0.2
I can ping the modem and the network card (PC). I set up the bridge using the Wizard in XP. |

| reply to looch2 why are you using an XP software bridge though? shouldnt need it at all. does your modem have a built in NAT? or a built in sharing setup? if it is just a base modem then you should change your NIC to obtain IP automatically. I keep wondering from what you are saying that the modem has an IP.... is it a router/modem? modems usually do not have an IP that you can access.

| reply to looch2 aight same as my surfboard for the most part. change nic, delete all setttings, just make it to it obtains automatically. get rid of XP gateway or whatever, dont know what it is, but if 2k does not need it then neither does XP. go then to IE and go to tools/ internet options/ connections/edit or setup. create one over lan, no proxy settings at all!, there should be no checks on the proxy page. but make sure it knows yer over a lan. and you should be good.

| reply to looch2 Hate to tell you this but the modem that you bought isn't compatible with Qwest DSL. Qwest uses PPPoA (PPP over ATM) and the DSL800E doesn't support that. Here's the tech specs for it. »www.bestdata.com/DSL800Especs.htm If you want to use a third party modem, I know that an Efficient Speedstream 5660 (»www.efficient.com/products/routsoho.html) will work. I'm using one with my Qwest DSL account. -- Terrorists are cowards in hiding. |

| reply to looch2 The Cisco 678 is worth the money if nothing else for the ease of setup. Check the QWEST site (»www.qwest.com) and see if they are still rebating the 678. They had a deal going to rebate $145 after 45 days of service, which gets the price right pretty quickly! |

For what it's worth, rumor has it that Q is going to start "leasing" modems w/DSL... but I don't think that starts till the end of the month... and I'm not even sure it applies to the Cisco's... they're trying to get the testing done on the next generation... the Arescom 1000 series (1060 I think)... and start the "lease" promotion with them.

Any of you know if I could get the Arescom NetDSL 800 series (MSN version) to work with qwest.net DMT service? |
