| INFO: The Looooong Reset
If you've been helped by what I've always called "The Looooong Reset" please post what your symptoms were right here.
Recent firmware seems particularly vulnerable and various symptoms have been reported, all quite strange in nature, that has been fixed with this procedure. It's been reported LinkSys support also suggests this for almost anything that ails a LinkSys.
1) Be aware of all your custom settings because this resets the unit to all default settings.
2) Find the RESET pushbutton "hole" - it's on the front of a BEFSR41 and rear of the BEFSR11. If your unit has it in a unique place feel free to post it here.
3) Using a paperclip (or similar - a pen or toothpick works, too) press and hold the reset button for about 5 seconds. In the case of my BEFSR41 the DIAG light comes on when you've gone long enough. If unsure, hold it for 15 seconds.
4) You should now be reset to the default settings for your current firmware. Among many things this means the password is now "admin" (so it's a good idea to change this first thing).
Hopefully, your problems will disappear as the firmware will have completely initialized itself. |

| When I do the LOOONG reset
1-while holding the reset make sure -the Red/Orange diag lite comes on -then goes off
2-Continue to hold for 10 seconds
3-then release
This will clear all the settings and any log jams the router may be experiencing -- Linksys Links ? www.linksis.cjb.net |

»Heres an Interesting Problem
I've also since put a Linksys EZXS55W switch between my computers and the router. This seems to help enormously. Perhaps the simple architecture of a switch such as the EZXS55W gets convoluted when thrown into a the BEFSR41 router. Although you would like to think that this would be a somewhat simple integration. Who knows.
By the way the switch is puny compared to the router. Doesn't stack all that great on the router, but it does rest on top of it. |

| reply to Bill_MI I have been through this about a month ago. I was trying to flash back to 1.40 from 1.42. I went through many different versions looking for what was best for me. Anyway to make a long story, short I was having many PPPoE password problems. So I was reseting the modem completely after each flash.
What I found was that if the router wasn't reset "long enough" my passwords wouldn't reset. Basically I ignored the lights and held the thing down for about 30 seconds. That always seemed to work. |

Thanks for all the good input. I haven't personally seen a need for such a long reset but obviously several of you have. Hey, it can't hurt to hold it for an hour I'm sure! Maybe your hand...
I'd like to note I do this as a prudent measure on every firmware upgrade religiously. Something about initializing configuration memory makes me feel better.
Please continue to add success and even failures to this thread. |

FYI, I haven't used it yet but the BEFSR81 reset is in the back of the unit near the power plug. |

| reply to Bill_MI Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I had given up hope of ever solving my BEFSR41 miserable uplink speed problem, the subject of three posts here and an unanswered E-mail to Linksys tech support. Finally concluded it must be some defect in the Linky.
I just called CompUSA to see if they had another BEFSR41 in stock, which I was about to drive over to buy.
Checked the forum one final time to see if any new posts on the subject, and I saw your post.
Tried the "extended" looooong reset, holding about 25 seconds beyond the diag light cycle.
Viola, problem solved! After more than a year of putting up with it.
I had previously exercised the "non-extended" long reset, releasing a few seconds after the diag light cycle. But that didn't do the trick.
I did notice some WAN LED flashing on both the BEF and the modem during the extension period.
I'm really thankful for your post, which was just in the nick of time. It saved me a long drive and about $100, which I will now spend on some web publishing tools.
I'm so happy! Now I can publish my web via DSL instead of dial-up (which was much faster until now).
I think I'd better post a new thread on this, just in case others miss this one.

| The Longer Looooong Reset
Thanks to everyone for their input.
This idea of going far longer than the DIAG light coming on is curious. Too many people have said it makes a difference so something must be going on.
Question for anyone that's seen this...
I'd like to know if the password changes back to "admin" with the shorter, ineffective, try at this reset? Would this be a reliable indicator? |

| What to do if DIAG doesn't come on.
REFERENCE: »Befsr41 v2 - reset / loooong reset? In the interest of keeping this info in one spot this thread reminded me I've also seen this happen.
Try as long as you like the DIAG light never comes on. In fact, I've seen the RESET completely ineffective - it does nothing. The solution is a power-cycle of the router then try again.

I have tried this method along with downgraded to a more stable firmware, and nothing has changed, after a month the router would get a mind of its own, and it would disconnect me from the internet for no reason at all. I say that we need a real company that produces quality products for thier money, linksys takes the money, and offers no support other than replacing your router, and that has failed on several occasions to consumers, and me as well.
Either linksys fixes our problems or gives us our money back. |

| I use a befw11s4 v.2 and a efficient 5851. After having numerous problems with connections, file sharing, netbios, not being able to login into the linksys router from one computer but another... I decided to just reboot and shut down everything. The linksys, the computers, the efficient et al.
Not only can I now see the other computers from network neighborhood, I can also printer and file share on them, and log into the linksys from all computers and the speeds seem to be where they should be.
Don't know what happened or what I did though it all seems to work now. |
