Because that's how the article described the person in question. Ease up, man. If you become easily offended at terminology such as epilepsy or emotionally disturbed then don't read this forum. I am not going to sugarcoat my vocabulary to protect you from what you voluntarily choose to read online. Epilepsy really has nothing to do with the situation for the story. I have it. I play games. Am I an addict and suicidal? Nope. The guy was basically a social outcast. He lived on his own, was overweight and worked for a pizza place. He spent hours upon hours playing Everquest. His mom tried to help him but couldn't. His mom is trying to sue the company that makes Everquest because he was addicted. If she wins then I'm sure we'll see a lot more lawsuits pop up once this game goes on PS2. Heck I'm sure more will pop up when people get divorced because of this game. Good thing. You wouldn't wanna go offending anyone's ultrasensitive feelings by mentioning reality now, would you. -- If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. -T.J. |

| Good posts on both the subject of the poor kid and for responding to the insecure PC crowd. Thank goodness, the story didn't also mention the kid was Islamic, (he wasn't) as well as being epileptic and emotionally disturbed. Not only would you have been been probably banned from DSLR for just being the mailman but protesters would have shown up at your house to yell at you for being a bigot and someone who preaches hate just for quoting the Islamic part. All of this because you just quoted a story. You've got to love it.

If you think about this, the kid was probably being kept alive by Everquest. I don't think he killed himself just because of the game. -- That which does not kill us, makes us stranger. |

| reply to mags2 Get a grip people!
The person who killed himself was a 21 year old adult who was diagnosed by a licensed psychologist as suffering "depression and schizoid personality disorder, symptoms of which include a lack of desire for social relationships, little or no sex drive and limited range of emotions in a social settings." He also had epilepsy and suffered from seizures. (I assume he must have been taking several mind altering drugs for these conditions.)
The reason he committed suicide is obvious. It was because of his addiction and involvement in playing his computer game. What else could it be? Right?
I am not attempting to mock anyone or minimize the value of life or the death of anyone. But come on people. Get a grip on reality. Please. -- Just because its factual and accurate doesn't mean its true. |

Exactly. Just like the violence on T.V. is what causes all crime.
They should just ban all TV and video games.

Good point. The BBC web site "Talking Point" forum recently asked for readers opinions on whether watching violence on TV caused increased violent behavior in children and in people in general. They published my response, which basically said the violence didn't effect me one way or another but the commercials made me homicidal both in their content and timing of interruption! -- Just because its factual and accurate doesn't mean its true. |

| reply to mags2 happened to a employee at work
We lost a employee at my work to EverQuest. Nice guy, but one day he stopped coming to work. He called in sick for a week straight then stopped calling. His roommate whom also worked here, said hegot so addicted to EverQuest that he got really depressed and gave up on life. He'd only play that game and do nothing else at that point. Not sure what happened to him after that. He gave up a really good paying job for that game though.
I've played it, its entertaining but nothing I could stomach for more then 2 hours at a time. Did meet lots of people in the game that claimed they played for 10-12 hours a day minimium, hard to believe people have nothing better to do with life. I'm lucky if i get 2 hours of free time to play a computer game. |
