Bell Fibe 25/10 - ASUS RT-N66U to Sagemcome 2864 issuesHello,
I posted this in the Direct forum as well but we haven't been able to figure this one out. I have Fibe TV, Internet and Phone.
I've logged in to my ASUS RT-N66U using the PPPoE settings (b1s user name and password), connected from LAN2 on the modem to WAN on the router.
I've been experiencing internet disconnection issues when downloading/gaming/streaming where the modem will completely reboot itself and lose connection. Sometimes the lights on the modem will stay on, though I will lose TV, Phone and Internet until I manually reboot. I believe this is the Sync No Surf issue I've been reading about.
I am on the interleaved profile from bell (I asked yesterday and the bell rep showed me).
Now, this issue only started a week ago (last Thursday). When I connect directly to the modem however, I do not experience the disconnection issue. I know the router is not the problem because I've tried it on another router and the disconnection still occurs.
Is there something I'm missing with the PPPoE setup? I can't figure this one out. The Sagemcom wireless is garbage and doesn't maintain signal strength or speeds, and I have too many devices for it to handle.
So far I've had 4 technicians out to the house, they've replaced my port twice, they've put in brand new copper inside the home, we've tried 4 different modems, we've moved the modem to a different location, closer to where the line comes in to the house. We've tried rolling the firmware back (two versions back) on the modem. Nobody seems to be able to figure this out. |

There's another thread here about "bridge mode" on the 2864 not working properly since the recent firmware update about a week ago.
I have a N66U as well but use it as a wireless access point and let the 2864 do the heavy lifting. The wifi on the Sagemcom is garbage. |

Setting up the N66U as an access point you lose your firewall/port forwarding through the router though, don't you? |

I'm not a very advanced user and don't use port forwarding so it's not an issue. |

Ah I see, fair enough.
I checked the thread you were talking about. I have the FAST2864_V6846I firmware, which others have had success with, however, it has not solved my issue. |

I am having the same issue as above, and judging by the amount of threads in the Direct forum I don't think we are alone.
Since last Sunday afternoon I have been experiencing modem restarts at least 5-6 times a day, whenever the connection is strained by downloading/streaming. I am also using my own router which initiates a PPPoE connection (Apple Time Capsule).
The technicians in the Direct forum have been very helpful so far and have downgraded my firmware. I'm not sure to what version as I turned off the WiFi network on the Bell router so can't access the control panel without factory resetting - but this causes the modem to lose my Fibe TV credentials so I don't want to do that again. Despite this firmware downgrade the issue persists.
I have used this exact setup for years without problem so I am very confident it's the recent firmware upgrade that caused the issues. The alternative is not to stream/download but this is not workable for obvious reasons.
If anyone hears anything from Bell I would be very grateful, as this problem is becoming extremely frustrating.
Thanks! |

So you have reverted to an earlier firmware and are still experiencing the same issue? This is crazy. I'll have them bump me down to earlier firmware and see what happens. |

I'm not sure what firmware I am on, but yes - the Direct forum techs downgraded my firmware and the issue persists. I may just be on the alternative firmware others are talking about here (interleaved?). |

Okay maybe. I am also on the interleaved profile, on the FAST2864_V6846I firmware but I still have the issue.
Tomorrow I will request an earlier firmware and let you know if it resolves the issue. |

I have same router, same Bell services, and live in same area. Try the Merlin firmware for the N66U. Good support for it on smallnetbuilder forum. Yes I did have the disconnects using asus firmware which I believe were due to the SDK5 drivers from Broadcom. Trouble free now for the past year. |

This issue has been going on for several months with the "new" Sagemcom Firmware.
Solution 1) I bought an Sagemcom that has the old firmware on kijiji for 30$.I put user:test@test / password:test in the modem so that it will not receive firmware updates from bell. I'm not sure if this makes any difference, because I'm using solution #2 as well.
Solution 2) Using QoS on my router I have it set so that it will never use more than 23mbps. This prevents the modem from "going too fast" :^)
Solution 3) I heard a rumor that bell is doing a mass recall in March for the 2864.
Ridiculous... but works. |

I rather they spend the cash on getting rid of stingers than 2864s. |

said by Guest2 :I rather they spend the cash on getting rid of stingers than 2864s. They are adding 7330s to the 3 stingers in my area. The 7330s for their customers, stingers for wholesale. I asked. Talk about undue preference. And CNOC sits still for it. |

Still having the same issues as above, even after modem firmware was downgraded. For what it's worth, I'm using an Apple Time Capsule and I don't have a QoS setting to limit internet speeds so I'm basically avoiding any downloads or anything else that could max out the connection.
The Bell Direct techs are very helpful so I'm glad to be able to message them directly instead of calling all the time, but it's still a stressful process trying to fix something that is only an issue because of a firmware update.
The alternative is to use the Bell modem as DHCP and put my Time Capsule in bridge mode, but I'm hesitant to do so as I would then be more reliant on the crappy Sagemcom modem than I currently am.
I would be grateful if others could share developments or possible fixes here, the more the merrier. |

Seeing the same thing, with the same basic setup. (router behind the sagecom establishing the PPPoE session.) I don't think I have ever not seen this issue since I switched to using the sagecom last year. I was using the old white modem (can't remember the make/model) for years without any problems, and when I switched to the sagecom (no other changes...), when downloaded big files (movies from iTunes, games from Steam, torrents, etc...) I started seeing the modem rebooting. Fortunately, I don't have to manually reboot the modem when this happens (usually comes back within 5-10 minutes), but it's causing a lot of curse words from my wife when the TV show she was recording at the time of the reboot is missing 10 minutes. |

Honestly I don't think it matters if you have a 2nd Router doing PPPoE or not... I think it crashes in both scenarios lol.
Maybe you guys could ask bell to put you on a 20mbit profile instead of 25mbit? If one even exists between 15 and 25. |

The funny thing is, I never had any problems with the Sagemcom 2864 up until a week ago when the firmware upgrade was pushed out. Maybe one restart a month, max. Now it's four or five a day. |

I have the exact same router, and have been having the exact same issue. I contacted Bell and the tech said he did some tests and told me that I had a faulty line and would need a tech dispatch. I tried to tell him about the firmware issue however he did not know what "firmware" was. I'm certain there is nothing wrong with my line and it's the modem. Has anyone got around the issue or got bell to downgrade the firmware for them? |

Try the Bell Canada Direct forum, they are aware of the issue and have been downgrading firmware for some customers (although it hasn't resolved my issue). |

I've been downgraded to a previous version of the firmware, all of the copper inside my home has been replaced, as well as the line from the box on the side of the house to the box inside. I still have the issue. The only thing left is changing the line from the bell box to my house. |

I am about ready to switch ISP over this - what a ridiculous issue. Before I do, I'm going to try to get a hold of a 2864 that was never upgraded to the new firmware and set that up this weekend. If it works, I'll use test@test as the username and test as the password to try to prevent it from getting updates in the future.
Failing that, I will be moving to Rogers. |

SmartRG modem solved all the issues you guys are talking about in this thread for me. It created a new one though specific to my needs. Upload issues. At my internet cafe that is a problem. |

Unfortunately I'm stuck with whatever Bell provide as I also have Fibe TV. |

Yes, I also have FibeTV. I'd like to try the newer modem, Hub 2000 or whatever its called, but Bell doesn't believe its the router so they refuse. |

A bell tech had come to my house to replace the lines outside, however I also requested him to give me the new modem, the white home hub 1000(sagemcomm fast 4350). I hooked that up and the connection has been solid. I doubt there was anything wrong with the line, it has to be something to do with this modem. I have the same router rt-n66u, try requesting the new modem. I'm surprised they did all that work in your house without trying the new modem first. |

So I got my tech to install the new Home Hub 2000 for me. I disabled the wifi on the modem, plugged my router in to the LAN2 port on the modem and set up the PPPoE for my bell account on the router.
I've been downloading steady for about 8 hours now trying to kill the internet/tv, as well as playing on xbox live and steam. So far so good, no issues as of yet.
The Sagemcom 2864 had to have been the problem! |
