[Equip] SB-6183 Issue

Starting last night for what ever reason i can no longer access the GUI for my Arris SB-6183 i have tried everything to get this resolved with no luck. Tried multiple different computers tablets phones ect. Tried straight wired to different computers new either net cables rebooting the modem many times nothing works any ideas what the heck could have happened ?

That's strange. Are you still able to ping 192.168.100.1 from your internal network or did the modem stop responding on that address altogether?

Have you tried a factory reset on the modem?

No forgot to mention i can not ping the modem either it just times out. I still have full internet access with no issues, also the most i can to is unplug and plug it back in because this modem has no factory reset button and the only way to set back to factory default is inside the GUI and i cant get in. I will also add i have done nothing here what so ever to my modem or computers or anything else internet related. I am baffled..

Hmm. Try the following:

- Power down the modem
- Disconnect the modem from the coax feed
- Put a static IP assignment of 192.168.100.2 with a gateway of 192.168.100.1 onto one of your devices, and plug it directly into the 6183 Ethernet interface.
- Power up the modem and try to hit it on 192.168.100.1

If it still doesn't respond, might be time for a warranty replacement.

Yeah no go. I guess its time to box it up and return it to Best Buy and hook my Zoom 5341J back up. I have had a few strange things happen before but this tops the cake.

Maybe you can post the version it currently has and others can chime in if they have the same or a different version.

Also, look in the error log entries and see if it reports that a new version was just pushed.

Hey sorry you had an issue. Let us know when you get the 6183 replaced. I'm curious if a firmware update caused this, since I have one as well.

I am hopeful that Zoom will eventually release a 16-channel modem. My 5341J sees far fewer T3 timeouts and codeword errors than any Motorola modem I've used.

Perhaps with time the SB6183 will receive newer firmware that potentially addresses this issue; I know Motorola had a hell of a time with the 6141.

I have the 6183 and was a little concerned about the firmware update and if that may be causing his problem.
I had to call Comcast about another issue and asked the tech about a firmware update.
He said there have been no firmware updates on the 6183. The original firmware is. SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-03-29-NOSH.
Just checked my 6183 and that's what it has.

Same firmware version as me. I read in a firmware release note for the SB61xx models that the service provider has the option to lock out access to the web UI completely or require a username and password similar to what Cisco does, but to date I haven't seen that put into practice. Having said that I'm not sure if that's what happened here with a rouge misconfiguration or if it was just some sort of random glitch. I wouldn't know the behavior of what a total lockout would look like, it being a lockout prompt or simply a 404 error. The fact that it wasn't able to be pinged yet internet was still functioning makes me think it's possible. If the modem was still hooked up I'd love to see if a Comcast engineer could check the configuration for that unit and see.

I was going to say if he uses Charter Cable, I've read many user's complaints about being locked out by our ISP. I don't have a 6183, so I can't confirm.

Sorry, I forgot which forum I was reading. Time to call it quits.

I know that some Cisco/SA models on some ISP's either rented or purchased have this problem. »[TWC] Customer-owned modem menus locked or not?. A friend of mine who bought his Cisco/SA DPC2100R2 modem from Cox years ago has this problem, which is one of the reasons why he's getting my SB6120. I'll shut up about my theory now. Sorry.

How about trying the new Netgear CM500 16x4 modem?

I'm sure they have but consumer trust and piece of mind is hard to get back. In that article you posted it said the issue was known about for two years, yet it was never fixed until the incident. I found out news reports were downplayed after talking to affected customers the past few years. Many modems were bricked and replaced out of pocket.

Yeah, I know, that sort of thing never happens with Motorola/ARRIS devices, right?

Oh wait ...

I returned the 6183 thank god i have a good friend that works there because i was over my return window and he got it done. I decided since i dont have 16 channels here at the present time to just get my money back and wait till my area is upgraded then consider a 16x4 modem again. I have to say though my old trusty Zoom 5341J is humming right along with no issues what so ever.

Re: [Equip] SB-6183 Issue

I am having the exact same issue as OP.
SB6183 modem purchased and provisioned recently, was able to access 192.168.100.1 as recently as yesterday, but not any more.
Internet works, mind you, but being locked out of stats report page stinks.
I'll be returning the modem to Best Buy and going back to the SB5100 for the time being, if I can.
Will consider the Zoom 5341J or the newest SMC one, forgot the model number, but it's a 16x4 device.
Bummer

Edit: Also, what's up with these super-bright LEDs on the front panel - the modem looks like a miniature Christmas tree on steroids, lol.

Anybody remember the Netgear CG814WG? Yea... I've never trusted Netgear modems since then. They make a pretty mean router, but modems... Nope, I'll stick to Motorola/Arris.

Bad idea. The 5100 was EOL'd a while ago. You won't be able to get it back online anymore. And if you somehow get someone to set it up for you, it won't last.

Mike linked to a more recent issue with Netgear modems used on a different ISP

»www.scmagazine.com/cable ··· /341434/

And one only needs to google "Netgear CG3000DCR problems" to evenutally find a laundry list of problems Comcast has had on the business side. I have been told off the record by multiple CSRs, install techs & other Comcast reps that Netgears are to be avoided on cable networks.
