MiKey23Rus-Mafia join:2001-05-21 Northbrook, IL | Uncap = Trouble, just read I've been reading some of these recent Uncapping posts (locked posts now :|) and have noticed that some people believe ATTBI doesn't watch out for uncapping. Well I'm afraid to say but they do. I know someone that tried of of those uncapping tricks. For 3 weeks service is great. Then one time, he can't browse or connect to the internet. He checks out his logs and sees something new. called 'Blocked.cfg'. ATTBI blocked him from the service. Now he has to get DSL, or whatever else there is. ATTBI techs are pretty stupid, I'll agree to that, but they have people just as smart as the actual people that "Hacked" ATTBI, working and banning bandwidth hogs. You might be a lucky person that never gets caught if your speed is uncapped. But there really is no turning back. ATTBI is probably one of the biggest Cable Internet providers in the US. They aren't complete idiots. -- Beer For Breakfast CS1 (multi-map)Counter-Strike Owns |

 | reply to MiKey23 it's a game of cat and mouse to them how long till they figure out how to just rewrite the good cfg when it gets over written or snoop the network for other info and steal another users mac addies. I hope attbi can control this becuase i did read of such happening in a european contry where i will not post i don't wanna open any bags for attbi i actually like my service since it became stable not fast but finally stable -- I too was a attbi hater but now with this new service my connection is to slow to complain ... |

| reply to MiKey23 i have to agree. uncapping is not the way to go. somehow we have to find a way to steal cable without detection. how can we? we need some of the finest minds on the net to try and tackle this issue. Stealing cable has to be a major priority for this country. I propose. that by the end of this decade. We place a man on the moon and give him cable free of charge while he is there.
ask not what your cable company can do for you. but what you can do to your cable company.
Thank you for your time in this matter. |

What would have been funnier than this is if he would have received a file that would have limited him to 44k down and 26k up. That would have been hilarious. Dial-up speeds for 50 bucks a month. |

 | reply to MiKey23 I'm in the same boot as CRPB, I have to say it, I TOLD YOU SO!! LOL, now on a more mature note, this is some proof that ATTBI is actually scanning for people who have uncapped their modem. There is a way to not get caught, but I'm not going to post it. Anywayz... a big thanks to Mikey23 for bringing this information to us. Stay Safe All.. -- ** Speed 1471(down)/125(up) kbps **(At least 29 times faster than a 56k modem)Logged result.Finish. |

at the risk of providing too much information, but couldn't he just uncap his modem again? |

| reply to MiKey23 You are assuming that he is stupid enough to do that. They already know that he uncapped his modem so they will be monitoring him more closely. If he uncaps his modem again they will terminate his account very quickly and never allow to get connected again EVER. -- Tech Support Plan B: Sir do you have a child? You do great! Could you put him on the phone? Hi your Dad is having a email problem and..Oh you know the problem and fixed it? Great! Also check the SNMP. |

six9 join:2001-12-03 Atlanta, GA | But couldn't he "uncap" it again with the regular .cfg file that it gets so it looks "normal"?
How long would the blocked.cfg stay there? Long enough for him to call in and ask or forever?
I'm not asking for myself as I have no clue how to uncap and have an RCA modem which allegedly cannot be uncapped. |

 | reply to MiKey23 Hmm... there are very easy work arounds to this, even if they do cancel your service or send you the "Block.cfg" file. I'm not going to post them, and I don't think people will be able find out how to on the web. Just something to think about.. -- ** Speed 1471(down)/125(up) kbps **(At least 29 times faster than a 56k modem)Logged result.Finish. |

| reply to MiKey23 They only send the blocked.cfg to people who have abused their service (I don't want to start a debate over what is abusing your service). After they send him the new config file the monitoring people (I don't know the technical term) will be monitoring very closely to make sure he doesn't do anything else illegal with it. -- Tech Support Plan B: Sir do you have a child? | It doesn't matter if they are monitoring him... there's still ways to get around it. |

| reply to MiKey23 True but you have to figure since they know that you have done it once, if they catch you again they will probably go after you in court, but you never know. I'm just saying if he has any common sense what so ever he wouldn't try it again. -- Tech Support Plan B: Sir do you have a child? You do great! Could you put him on the phone? | reply to MiKey23 Just like CRPB stated - he DID tell you all so. If people continue to do stupid things, they can do more than send the 'block.cfg' file - they can just have a tech go out and put a filter on the line, retrieve the modem, and then you will have NO service.
That's one thing there is no workaround for. After all, they don't have to keep providing service to abusers. |

unless you are smart enough to buy your modem.. 8p
hehe, i support blocking the users who try and break the cap... they waste the bandwidth and end up being the cause for: more problems higher rates and probably more that i just cant think of right now
oh well, glad someone had to learn the hard way |

 | reply to MiKey23 Ok i just spoke with a guy that works at the place that sends the blocked.cfg
1. the first offense, you lose your account permanently 2. if you change your blocked.cfg, they block your modems mac addy at the cmts 3. It is very easy for them to detect
Just thought yall'd like ta know =) |

And I would be willing to bet that tech support would not see this fact and schedule a truck roll. And I would also bet that AT&T would still charge you. And lastly, what if you bought your own modem? It would have a different MAC and given the inability of AT&T to talk to its different parts, support would probably let you put it on there as long as you pay the $9.95. Or is this not right? It seems a bit harsh to kill an account on the first try. |
