Windows XP is cool...but I lost my DSL !!!

Argh!

Loaded Windows XP yesterday (upgraded from Me) and now I can't connect my DSL! I followed the directions for the PPPoE setup, but it comes up with the following error: "error 769: the specified destination is not reachable".

While installing the upgrade I did get a message stating that the Network TeleSystems PPPoE Adapter NTSP3 may experience problems. I had visited the PacBell DSL website to make sure my modems were XP compatible and everything appeared to be fine.

I am able to connect via 56k modem. My network card is working and is pingable. PacBell, after a 3 hour telephone conversation, said they need to investigate further and they'll get back to me. They also transferred me over to Compaq - the Presario I purchased was a DSL ready model available to new PacBell customers. Compaq said it has nothing to do with them.

Any help...or do I just have to play the waiting game with PacBell/SBC?

Thanks!

JIM

XP has built in PPPoE no need to use EnterNet see if this FAQ helps you set it all up:

If you want to still use EnterNet see if this FAQ helps:

Thanks for the response!

I'm pretty sure I am/was using EnterNet, but how do I know for sure? I didn't have to set anything up - the computer just had to be plugged into the phone line and the dsl was up and running (when I was using Me, that is).

I had previously checked out both the links you posted. I followed the first one exactly, but I still keep getting the same error message.

I checked out the other one, but when I attempted to load the Enternet CD that came with my DSL kit it said: the software you are loading - NTS Enternet PPPoE Adapter - has not passed Windows Logo testing for compatibility with XP.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated...

You had to be using Enernet with ME, or RASPPPOE, or something similar...

That is how I knew. That adapter is a part of EnterNet software that SBC ships.

I don't know that much about XP so I'm out of ideas myself.

you will need to downgrade back to WinME or lower, or unless if you can find updated driver for your Compaq internal TI modem (which is discontinued for some time now), WinXP is not compatible with your TI modem...or you can buy a brand new external modem from HERE. Make sure you remove the TI modem and its associated driver...

Thanks for the response.

I talked to several "computer savvy" coworkers and they said the same thing you did: go back to Windows Me. Looks like that's what I'll be doing.

One last question, though. Is this a Compaq issue, or a PacBell issue?

Once again, thanks!

Technically it's TI issue but again TI only sell the chipsets and someone designed this internal DSL card with those chipsets. Who designed that? Well Compaq supposed to know, after all, they are the one that put into their computer and sell it as a bundle through a reseller such as Pacbell. So Compaq supposed to provide the latest TI driver for the WinXP. But again, Compaq is not obligated to make sure its previous hardware is compatible with future OS, neither does Pacbell.

How about Microsoft? Would it be their responsibility to make sure WinXP is compatible with TI DSL card?

Well, that's everyone's guess, who knows who supposed to provide the upgraded TI driver for future OS such as Win XP or even WinXP version 2003?

Uummm, you dont need to go back to WinME... I should have responded earlier, but I figgured someone else would know.

You just need to set up a connectoid via XP...

start>control pannel>network and internet connections>network connections> to the left, create a new connection>next>opt 1>next>opt 2>next>opt 2>next>DSL>next>uid/pword>next>checkmark add this connection to my desktop>finish>connect

And uninstall Enternet 300, as on Windows XP it will corrupt the Operating System.

Miracle of miracles - the problem has been solved! I ended up finding an interesting post on the Compaq Communities website. The post is 2 months old and it worked like a charm. It boggles my mind that, just a few days ago, I was on the phone with Compaq and PacBell and they had NO IDEA what to do. Yet, a fellow Compaq/PacBell user has had the answer for a couple of months!

In short, PacBell DSL and XP are up and running!

Win XP changed VPI of the TI modem!?

Is this the link that you were referring to? Upgrading to WinXP changed the VPI setting of the TI ADSL modem? No kidding! Since the VPI setting is by default set to "0". It's an unexpected answer indeed. Why would Microsoft WinXP will try to change a thing like that? Following text is the whole story:

said by wbullard:

"Upgrading a Presario 7585 with the TI ADSL internal modem to Windows XP - YOU CAN DO IT!!!!"

"Contrary to what Compaq's own tech support will tell you, the 7585 with the internal TI ADSL modem can be upgraded to Windows XP. I purchased my 7585 from Southwestern Bell - they had a deal going where for $60/month you got a new PC and DSL service. I called the SWB tech support number twice to confirm that the TI modem would work with XP. Both times the response was "it should". Other messages on this community board were from 7585 owners who upgraded to XP only to get error message 768 and gave up. I got this error message after I upgraded. Rather than call the DSL support number I called Compaq and they said XP wouldn't work because there wasn't an XP driver for this modem. WRONG!!!!! I guess they were correct in that the Microsoft hardware compatibility list doesn't list this modem as being XP compatible but IT WORKS. Here is what you need to know (since neither SWBell or Compaq have a clue about how to do this).
After you install XP you need to use "Add/Remove Programs" to uninstall the EnterNet 300 program. (I suppose you can do this before you upgrade to XP, but that isn't what I did so I don't know for sure). Then you need to reinstall the TI DSL Manger. You can do this by running the program WINGRME. You'll click on the rubic cube icon and then you'll see the TI ADSL install program. The goal is to see the icon next to the clock in the sys tray that has the up and down arrow under the horizontal bar. The bar was blue so I knew the modem was in sync, but it still wasn't working. I called the DSL support number back and after a long time on the phone my "case" got elevated to a real tech and he told me to change the VPI setting for the modem card to 0 from the value of 8. AND THEN IT WORKED!!!! It seems incredulous that neither SWBell DSL support or Compaq support could provide a simple document about how to do this. Compaq was really bad since they said it wasn't possible to upgrade to XP. I upgraded because Win 98 was crashing a lot. I think I"m glad I did, but the PC is certainly running slower now - I only have 198 megs of RAM and will probably upgrade to 256 in hopes of speeding it back up. Good luck if you try this."

Did you change the VPI setting to make it work?

Re: Windows XP is cool...but I lost my DSL !!!

Yup - that's the exact post that I used! I didn't even have to change the VPI. I used the TI ADSL Wizard, chose SBC/Prodigy, restarted and it was up and running.

Still annoys me that Compaq and PacBell aren't privy to this info.

I see, thanks for the reply. So somehow WinXP upgrade changed some settings of the TI card, but by uninstall/re-installing the driver, and choosing the correct associated ISP reconfigured the TI modem with the right settings. It's something that Compaq/PBI/Microsoft support wouldn't have known unless they would like to spend some time to play with the TI card themselves with Pacbell DSL...

Probably reinstalling is not necessary if we could follow what "wbullard"'s guidelines to change VPI settings...
