| The New Firewall Poll
Well, almost one year has passed since our first Firewall Poll and it's still being quoted. However there have been some changes in the past year and we have a lot of new members with new experiences. Those reasons alone certainly justify a new Poll.
Since we are almost certainly going to hear complaints about how the Poll is put together, I'm going to attempt to answer a few of them before hand. If you are or have been using multiple firewalls, due to forum poll limitations you get to choose only one. So pick up the one that you consider to be your main choice. If you use two software firewalls on the same machine, choose the one you consider to be the primary and not the one you use as a back up. If your option is not there, choose other. If your situation is unique, then you figure it out yourself.
Just don't forget to post and explain things. If you are voting "other" tell us what. If you use a router, then you may want to let us know which brand. If you pick "a router and a software firewall", then let us know which, etc... You get the drift.
The last firewall Poll had 1895 votes. Let's see how many votes we can pile up and how long we can get this thread up for all to see.
Poll What kind of firewall / Intrusion detection System do you use? |

Proxomitron/Zywall 10/Kerio PF. So I guess with this set up I am supposed to vote for "Proxy server / router /software" right?
Edit: Wrong. Proxo doesn't really have firewall capabilities. It's a filtering proxy server. It shouldn't be mistaken with a firewall. Sorry for the edit. Had to do it so others don't make that mistake. -- WCB!

| reply to Wildcatboy Kerio on 2 machines. One at home, one at work. I'm very happy with this firewall, although the initial learning curve was rather steep. Once you grasp the basics of the logic employed, it's much more user-friendly. I'd recommend it highly to anyone looking for competent protection with an element of configurability. -- Follow me to tweaks forum |

Well, Proxy Server option is intended for proxy servers that act as a firewall or a Gateway for a Network. Proxo doesn't really have firewall capabilities. It's a filtering proxy server. It shouldn't be mistaken with a firewall. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

You're gonna hate me for this!
Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) should be a bit looser. Some Norton Internet Security (NIS) users are probably going to check "Other" because they don't realize that NPF is the firewall component of NIS.
Could ya kinda tweak the label on that choice? -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

| reply to Wildcatboy ive tried any and every thing over the years but im quite happy with tiny pers firewall at the minute i notice zonealarm has a lot of votes, whenever i try this it always seems a bit of a pain, (thats prolly as much me as the software though ) i tend to use a port scanner and trojan detectors as well as a firewall anyway, just to be that bit safer. it will be interesting to see the outcome of this poll though. |

| reply to Wildcatboy I have a rather unique setup. I only use NAT enabled router for the part of my network that I run for my Company (Database server, RAS server, development server). All of this is behind an Efficient 5660 since it was free from my ISP.
I use Zone Alarm (the free version) on my Dell laptop which is sometimes on the work Network and sometimes on my home network.
Then I have my home network behind a NAT enabled LinkSys BEFSR41.
BTW, both networks are in my home on the same DSL connection. My home network is protected from the company network and has to go through 2 routers to get onto the Internet. |

Well, I guess they do now. I'm afraid the system won't allow edits of Polls. Both the Poll and votes will be lost. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

| reply to Wildcatboy LinkSys BEFSR41 and Kerio, Hmmm, but that is only one combination, can we vote more than once? lol
WCB, I know you can't edit a poll, but can a poll ask more than one question?
If so, next year you might want to have firewall brand as one question, then Router/Nat yes or no as another. This would prevent skewing of the results to some extent. [text was edited by author 2002-04-16 12:05:19] |
