Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 Here is my results so far,
(1) Apart from confusion of how to use wireless MAC access control, setup is fairly easy and painless. I still have no clue how do you setup a specific wireless MAC to allow its access to the router while others will not. The page is confusing and I only have one wireless card to test.
(2) Counter-Strike still works but wireless Activity light now keep flashing the same rate as the wired port that is playing the game. Maybe that is how things suppose to work. No problem with game play at all.
(3) TraceRoute works well.
(4) XP sees the router and displays status well. Status page reports router speed as 3.2 mbps - a hardcoded value for all linksys routers.
(5) Tried disable SSID broadcasting and my DLink PCMCIA wireless card works fine with it.
(6) Tried power off the router and put it back on. The Wireless LAN stays activated. Earlier version usually end up with wireless disabled. Will test more see if this indeed has been fixed.
(7) The internal setup pages seem show up slower than before but no big deal. There is a noticeable delay before page shows up. However, general internet browsing speed is not affected.

evansc The uPnP icon, does it stay in your tray all the time??? Mine came up, and then disappears, but uPNP is still running. just curious.
Also: i agree with all of the above observations, and have another to add. I now have an Internet gateway Icon in my network connections folder. When you go into its properties, you can enable/disable the uPNP service that you want to run, which are identical to the services available through the Linksys Setup page, and any changes you make in the properties/settings window, automaticaly get entered into the router's page. Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 My TFTP program isn't working. I get "Erasing Flash" and it stays there for 20 seconds, nothing happens to my router, then I get an unable to connect message.
Suggestions? |

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 I flashed and also got the UPnP in the taskbar... I have a notebook on my network and I still can't get voice/video/file transfers to work across it... could be the fact that I'm clueless on network stuff in general, but I thought that this would've fixed it... |

| reply to theos2 theos2: No; It comes up every time you make a change to the router settings, but then goes away. mpsbos: What version tftp are you using? I have a few different versions up on my site. You might want to try hard coding a IP of 192.168.1.2 Subnet of 255.255.255.0 and Gateway of 192.168.1.1 to your NIC and then unplugging all connection but your computer. | reply to Linksys Tech2 First observations:
Loaded fine over wireless (reckless, I know) and did a hard reset. WinME boxes found the router and added to network places. W98 remained blissfully ignorant.
Tried an Orinoco Silver and Proxim DS - OK with no WEP, 64 and 128 (Proxim).
Tried turning off the "Allow "Broadcast" SSID to associate?" setting, but NetStumbler found it displaying the MAC address and ESSID. Shared key was selected. Setting preamble length to short in the wireless settings did kill NS by effectively killing the Orinoco. The Proxim worked fine with long & short preamble. I assume the WPC11 will behave similarly, but will try it later.
Logging seems to be working fine.
Saw that certain pages change without resetting the router, as promised.
There's a second MAC filter table on the wireless page, but it appears to be another allow all vs. deny all. Too bad.
Will tinker some more and post later.
edit -
WLANExpert sees the MAC address of the router with any combination of SSID broadcast & preamble length.
With the S4 set to 128 bit WEP, shared key & short preamble, the Proxim card works with 128 bit or NO WEP, but not 64 bit. ?!

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 Thanks for posting the 1.42.7 firmware... Downloaded and flashed my router tonight. Works great... except the WEP bug.
Re: WEP - This is a bad bug! The list of bugs fixed in the initial message from Linksys Tech 2 actually claims that a bug which allowed non-WEP clients to connect to a WEP-mandatory router was fixed. To me, looks like it was introduced! (Or maybe it was there before and I didn't notice... but it certainly wasn't fixed with 1.42.7).
Set your router to Mandatory WEP and it still allows non-WEP clients to connect! Was it always like this? Or did it break in this version or some other recent version of the firmware?
Re: The Station MAC Address Filter page. Looks like you can use this to specify either MAC addresses to *allow* or to *exclude*. First you must enable Station MAC Filtering (checkbox on Wireless page). Then in the list page, enter the MAC addresses you want to *allow*, with no "-"'s, and *DO NOT* check "Filter"-- as "Filter" will *exclude* the address as opposed to allowing it.
My setup is probably the common scenario, where you want to explicitly list your clients and exclude everyone else. Haven't tested it thoroughly, but appears to be working.

Re: Deny All WLAN MAC Filter This MAC filter appears to behave either as a deny all OR as a deny specific, depending on how you have it set up.
After initial dismay, I decided that it must do more than only deny known MAC addresses -- otherwise it wouldn't provide the option to enable/allow specific MACs.
I seemed to be able to achieve a "Deny All" MAC filter by adding just my WPC11's MAC address and not checking the Filter box. I tested this by allowing a fictitious MAC and not specifying my WPC11. My WPC11 WAS DENIED as I'd hoped!! I've only tested it with the one wireless nic and not extensively, but it seems to work. |

Re: More observations (Take these with a grain of salt as I am a bit bleary eyed..)
(1) Re: non-WEP accessing router following mandatory WEP setting.
From my earlier experience with 1.39.2 and 1.40.3, the only time my non-WEP nic (WPC11) could talk to the router after WEP was enabled was when the nic had already been connected to the router. If I rebooted it wouldn't connect without the WEP passphrase -- presumably this means that most non-WEP stations would still be disabled, but its still a nasty bug.
I haven't yet repeated this failing with the 1.42.7 firmware, but I only tried it a couple of times.
(2) WLAN MAC Filter -- anyone else noticing a small performance loss? seems possibly intermittent, on the order of 100-200 kbps. This is nothing like the big drop for using power save or WEP (which can as much as 1 Mbps each for me).
(3) Disable SSID Broadcast -- It prevented my WPC11 from "seeing" my SSID and the existence of my access point. It also cannot connect using the "any" SSID. No-Strings mentioned that netstumbler still found the SSID. Was it really still broadcasting the SSID or just the BSSID?
(4) uPnP -- using port 5678 to configure the router keeps popping up "Syntax Error Line 1" dialogs. The pages look ok, and the settings can be applied, but it seems whenever this happens the "settings successful" page either doesn't come up or takes a very long time to appear.
I don't get the script errors if I configure it on port 80, but I still find that it usually takes the browser a very long time to finish loading the confirm page (if at all). The router reboots immediately, however. It's just the browser utility that doesn't provide timely/any feedback. |

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 Re: WEP. Ah, I see. Yes, if I switch my client to non-WEP, and then reboot the router (still in mandatory WEP mode on the router side), then it *does fail* to connect as expected.
...So looks like what you said-- that if the router has already 'seen' the client in WEP mode during the current router 'session,' it allows the client to switch back and forth between WEP/non-WEP even if WEP is mandatory. However the router reboot appears to fix things and lock-out a non-WEP client...

Re: WEP lockout Actually, I meant that when I rebooted my laptop, the card could no longer communicate without WEP. But yes..
Think I tried the router reboot too, but presumably this should have happened when it reset after you hit 'Apply.' |

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 Just Flashed my BEFW11S4 to this new firmware... so far so good...
I'm soooo happy that linksys has finally added some security features on the wireless portion... I was just about to sell this thing for a wap11 and a router until this came out...
I first tried the Disable broadcast SSID... After removing it in xp list of networks to connect, and loaded netstumbler.. (this would simulate as if i was war driving, net stumbler did not pick up the Access Point. Left it for 2 minutes.. )
I then tried the MAC Filtering... Kinda a tricky setup..
As everyone wants to add just their list of Wireless cards to the filter setup so it will accept only those nics, not the opposite... it works this way...
In Wireless Station MAC Filter is set to enable.
then you click Edit Mac Filter Settings
In there, you add your mac address in the stations...
The filter tab is made for disabling the mac address.. I guess they added that in case lets say you find frank downloading porn and you want to suspend his wireless nic for a week, so you can checkmark it instead of deleting the mac address and then reentering it... Tricky way of putting it, but a good idea.
One Bug i found was when i was entering the mac address... Once again in my prev. bugs i've seen on these routers, the wireless firmware doesn't load and wireless is disabled totally on the router... (ie the dreaded Firmware Version: ) Error... I reseted the router again and it popped back up.. tho scared me for a bit.
UPNP is quite neat... haven't tried it on MSN messagener etc.

When I get home tonight I'll report on getting things working (and any issues) if no one else tests that type of config by then. -- Have you tweaked your OOL connection? |

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 I sent the Bin file to some of you on Friday, but I did not have time to send it to all of you, I was off over the weekend that's why you guys did not get it, I've send it to everyone who e-mailed me make sure to report your findings.
Someone ask for documentation, this is beta firmware so there is no documentation, once this firmware becomes final we will have documentation to go with it.
If you did not e-mail you did will not get the firmware, I'm only responding to e-mails, make sure to include the model and version number of the router, and don't e-mail me more that once.
Thanks |

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 I've notice that some of you posted this firmware on your own FTP sites for public downloads. Please remove it or we will have to stop the beta testing in DSLR, and only do private testing.
Thank you!
