can anyone tell me how to connect 2 linksys routers together. I tried to do lan party for gaming. We have about 7 computer and 2 of the BEFSR41

Please make sure you tried it and make it work before you answer my questions...I tried so many way...no luck...thx all

This is couple questions I have.

1. what kind of cable do I use to connect 2 router (cross over or straight through) * I tried both*

2. How do I connect it? From where on the first router to where on the 2nd router. *I tried my cross over from uplink to WAN> * no luck...do I need to reset anything after connecting it***

3. do I need to change anything in the router setting (from Gateway to router?)

thx all

I have a BEFSR41 (connected to my cable modem) and a BEFW11S4 (connected to the BEFSR41). BEFW11S$ is the same as the BEFSR41 except it also has wireless capabilities.

Here's how it works..

My BEFSR41 is using a LAN IP Address of 192.168.1.1 and has DHCP on for all the LAN clients.

You add the the 2nd router by using a standard patch cable (same as you use for all your other connections to the router). You plug the patch cable into the Uplink port on the 2nd router and into ports 1 thru 4 on your 1st router.

You make no setting changes on the first router. But on the 2nd router, you do the following:

1) Plug a computer into the 2nd router
2) By default, the 1nd router will also be at 192.168.1.1 so go to »192.168.1.1 and set the LAN ip address of the 2nd router to 192.168.1.2 (assuming nothing else is using that static ip address). After applying that setting, you need to reconnect your computer to »192.168.1.2 to access the config pages on that 2nd router.
3) Go to »192.168.1.2/DHCP.htm and set the DHCP server to Disabled
4) Go to »192.168.1.2/RouteDyna.htm and set the Working Mode to Router.

You might want to do a quick (short) reset on the router at this point. Don't hold in the reset button for too long or you'll set all the settings back to factory settings.

At this point, all your machines plugged into either router will use the 1st router to receive their ip address from, so you need to check that the Number of DHCP Clients at »192.168.1.1/DHCP.htm is large enough to satisfy the requests.

That is what worked for me and a few others that have asked.

Have you tweaked your OOL connection?

Looks like Geek covered all the bases. Looks good to me!

I miss having LAN parties. Used to do that back in the DOOM days. 10base2 ISA cards, thin net wires, terminators, DOS IPX drivers. Was a pain in the ass to set up but we would play until the sun came out!
