Bestbuy, Walmart, Petsmart Security Issues

For about 2 days, there has been alot of talk about how when you purchase at a Bestbuy, all of your information is sent out in cleartext across a wireless network. That information can be captured while transfering across the network.

It has also been reported that Walmart and Petsmart are vulnerable to this same issue.

Save all your pringles cans and we will go in business making antennas for the rich and famous. I will drive you can take screen shots.

Sure wish they would get the price of gas stable.

Features - Experts warn of dangers of amplifying WLAN antennae
By Guy Kewney Posted on 10/03/2002 at 12:20
"It has been warned that exposure to even as little as a 1/4 watt amplified with a 14db antenna, such as described here, could lead to severe vision problems and possibly other health issues.
You really, really don't want to get into mucking about with wireless LAN antennae until you know a lot about what you are doing.

It is possible to massively boost the range of your local wireless network - and if you're serious about doing it, the "how-to" information is here - but the health warning isn't the only one you need to take on board.

Did not see this mentioned but the television news says Bestbuy has shut off all the affected systems. Not a good place to be from what they showed on the tube, the lines were very long.

"Major US retail chain Best Buy has been forced to close down its wireless cash registers after security experts revealed it had been making credit card information available to anyone in the vicinity with the equipment to detect wireless networks.

And global supermarket giant WalMart and US pet store PetSmart are under pressure to investigate claims their systems have exactly the same flaws."

As an IP professional, it is beyond me how something like this can get past normal IP due diligence. I mean, these are large companies with the resources for Infosec and legal staffs, and issues with wireless privacy are widely known. Basic stuff. Somebody screwed up royally.

I would like to know if these companies notified all of their customers that had transactions processed in this way that their credit card numbers may have been compromised.

Equipment which you could, ironically, buy at Best Buy.

Someone should try this one:

"Hi, I brought my laptop with me today, and would like to know if I could test-out this Wireless NIC..."

I'm sure one of the idiots working there would fall for it, too.

"So does it work?"

[CC numbers pouring-in]
"Ohhh yeah!"
