| End to the confusion over Kazaa and Kazaa-Lite
Visiting the forums often, I have noticed that there are a lot of postings with regards to the differences between Kazaa and Kazaa-Lite. Kazaa-Lite is simply Kazaa with the spyware and banner ads removed. A dummy cd_clint.dll file comes with Kazaa-Lite. There are some of us who have chosen to "neuter" Kazaa ourselves. This is simply done by installing normal Kazaa (remeber to opt-out of all the additional "features"), running ad-aware and removing all the spyware files. Then the dummy cd_clint.dll file is inserted into the Kazaa folder. When running ad-aware after installing Kazaa-Lite or after u self "neuter" Kazaa it will still pick up the cd_clint.dll file. Put this on ad-aware's ignore list. It is a harmless dummy file. Kazaa-Lite is not a different program, it is the same program just stripped of spyware. There is no functional difference between Kazaa and Kazaa-Lite except Kazaa-Lite has all the spyware removed. I for one took the path of "neutering" Kazaa myself simply for the fact that I can keep track of the changes I make. It doesnt take any special skills to "neuter" the program yourself. In fact its very simple. There are many forums on here discussing how to do this, here is one: »Here's how to disable the Kazaa spyware The above forum also discusses how to add entries to your hosts file to stop the banner ads.
This forum will show you how to fix Kazaa and allow it to find MP3's encoded over 128kbs: »Kazaa registry hack question......
Again the ONLY differences between Kazaa and Kazaa-Lite is that Kazaa-Lite has all the spyware removed. -- AOL DSL SUCKS / REMOVE SENATOR FRITZ HOLLINGS FROM OFFICE

I can't tell you how many threads I've posted in that the program is the SAME.
Seems like many people think it's an entirely different filesharing app that connects to fastrack. |

Guess some of the readership here has a real short attention span...

There's a couple of other mods that have gone into KaZaA Lite as well. Using a development tool like MS Visual C++, it's possible to open up a program's .exe file and edit the menus. For example, menu items can be removed from a .exe file. This works because menus are stored as so-called "resources" (kind of like a file within a file) inside the .exe file. If I open up VC++ 6, I can choose "File Open", choose kazaa.exe, with a file type of "resource" in the "open as" drop-down of VC++. I then get a tree display, showing icons, bitmaps, cursors, dialogs, and menus. I can then display the menus as they appear in the program, and can delete menu items. For example, I can open up menu number 128, see that there's a "View" menu with an item called "Shop". I can right click on this item and choose "cut", then save the modified kazaa.exe. When I open up KaZaA again, this menu item will be gone.
These are the kinds of things that the KaZaA Lite folks are doing. There's no programming at all. There can't be, as they don't have access to the source code. The other thing they do is repackage the install program. It's not the same as the original KaZaA install.
I had to get rid of KaZaA Lite, because they got too aggressive with editing the button bar resources. The editing they did caused the button bar to appear corrupted on my machine running WinXP. |

| reply to WildGod I currently use SpyBot to take out the spyware of the programs. It's packaged with dummy files and will rewrite them with the old ones and make backups to make sure it will still work.
Very nice program, if you run it with AdAware make sure not to delete the spyware items found in the SpyBot folder or it will also erase the dummy files and backups. |

| One note. Ad-aware should now recognize the dummy file and not flag it as spyware.

I use klite(the preneutered one lol) so I'm not sure what all will still be there. You have cydor, at the very least. . The dummy.dll file ppl were mentioning is what replaces cydoor(I beleive) because kazaa won't run without it. If you want to see what you have on your system, ad-aware is a good program for it. You can find it here: »www.lavasoft.de/ Be aware some programs require their spyware/adbased component to run. If you take it out with ad-aware some programs might not run. I'm sure there are companies that simply use the stuff to download new ads and are aboveboard about it. Its up to you if you wanna trust that company. I don't trust any of them, but to each their own.
