| Transition Blues -- Deja vu all over again?
Just wondering......
do ya think that if and when the Comcast AT&T deal gets approved, and the AT&T and Comcast operations are combined, we might have to go thru another "transition" (like from excite@home) and change our email, etc., and suffer thru weeks and months of problems? |

| reply to pugsam4 How can you be sure Comcast won't change to the AT&T system?
Or maybe not change to another system, but just change critical elements of its own system to accommodate the AT&T system?
Another transition might really ruin my whole day! |

| reply to jackbean Why wouldn't Comcast and AT&T Broadband merge their cable internet systems into one to take advantage of economies of scale ? Are you suggesting that the current AT&T Broadband customers are going to be dumped onto (er, I mean transitioned to ) Comcast High Speed Internet? |

| reply to pugsam4 Controversy is always entertaining.
One would think that they are going to have to marry some of their technologies. Are they really going to have the member services page at Comcast.net or will there be one page for all? Wouldn't surprise me if our IP addresses don't change again. Usernames - wanna compete with the same names at AT&T? One set of mail services or two? What about newsgroups? I think Pugsam's question is a good one. Here we (possibly) go again... |

Aww, let him be, if he gets upset and quits, then maybe we'll get a new P.S.O.C. that isn't so easy.

Really? Wow! Too bad nobody else in these forums has any friends who work for Comcast. It appears you're our only source of information.

| reply to pugsam4 First of all, Comcast is already using the AT&T backbone for our connection (as opposed to Sprint with @Home), so the basic infrastructure is already merged. I would think one of the benefits we would get would be unlimited newsgroups (since AT&T already has this). I don't know how good AT&T's customer service is, but I would think we would most likely go with AT&T's, since they have more experience with customer service management. I don't forsee any speed changes (AT&T has the same limits Comcast has), however, I think the cost for AT&T/Comcast would be much cheaper since they would own their own infrastructure. Mail & web limits would probably be the same as well. |

This assumes that cable internet after the merger would follow the AT&T Broadband model versus the Comcast High Speed Internet model. It may be premature to speculate that there will be a net gain in feature availability for current Comcast High Speed Internet customers. |

| reply to pugsam4 Depends on where you're from..I have subs routing through ATT lines, and some going through Sprintlink.
There probably will be some kind of merge between the backbones, how that will affect customers, no one knows..this is gonna be a WAYS off in the future..the merge isn't even penned in 100% yet, and the physical changes will take a lot longer..I'd say 6 months to a year.
Of course, this will mean adding bandwidth..my only hope is that it helps some of our subs, especially those poor guys in MD, MI, and NJ. -- Don't be jealous just because my voices aren't talking to you! |

Any time backbones are merging, it sounds like someone's getting screwed! |

I say the competition's not even close. Our names are cooler! |

all that says is that the other end of the pipe is on a sprintlink own router..
the physical line.. most cases an OC-3, is provisioned and owned by AT&T. The IP service goes through sprintlink for the most parts tho some areas may use other providers.
kinda like DSL in a way.. my dsl line is owned and provisioned by Verizon, the dsl signal is provided via Covad equipment, and the IP service is through mindspring - talk about a nightmare getting someone to take ownership of a line problem. -- Mindspring DSL 1500/384 ... Comcast HSI 1500/128 Yes I am a broadband junkie! |
