| reply to JIMY WinZip is a shareware, but you can use it for as long as you want because the evaluation period never really expires. -- I think, therefore I am. [text was edited by author 2002-05-10 00:39:49] |

| reply to JIMY They have the annoying nag screen to make you pay but it works fine if you don't mind the screen. $30 to register it and support the company. I keep using mine for free. -- This is a Manhattan-bound 7 Express train. The next stop will be Grand Central 42nd Street. Stand clear of the closing doors please. *Ding*Dong* |

| reply to JIMY WinXP has a zip program integrated so you don't need another program to open .zip files.
Also, PowerArchiver is a great little program, but the newest version is shareware. An older version was freeware and can be found at »www.oldversion.com/. -- "Those who would trade their freedom for security deserve, and shall have, neither." - Benjamin Franklin |

No, there isn't any need for them if all you want to do is extract now and then but there is a lot more to WinZip than simply doing extractions.. |

| reply to JIMY WinZip is an awesome tool - it is, to me, one of those "I wish that I'd written it" kind of things. Works well and simply. As noted, it's shareware and I strongly urge people to purchase the license - help keep the improvements coming!
If you do business with any companies that are concerned over licensing issues (as I do), then you'll probably want to get the license anyhow so they don't ask questions about using "unlicensed" software when they open up your zipped files.
The nice thing about WinZip is the ability to build self-extracting .exe files to send to those who don't have any extractor on their machine or are simply uneducated in using something like WinZip. -- Senator, I am not now, nor have I ever been a member of the Tupperware Party. |
