Help with extending the range of Zyxel P316

I recently purchased a Zyxel PRESTIGE 316 WIRELESS ROUTER and it seems to be fast and stable so far.

My only complaint is the range of the wireless connection is a little bit lower than my previous sucky router.

Is there a way to extend the range of the 316 that really works?

Thanks.

You can build your own. I don't know of any that are publicly available.

You can try experimenting with the orientation of the antenna on the P316 (i.e. vertical vs horizontal), this will change the radiation pattern of the radio signal and will extend the range in some areas, while reducing it in others.

Unfortunately, P316 does not have an antenna you can bend. The wireless functionality is provided with a wireless card sticking out of the back of the unit. The card has a building antenna.

If you would like to hook and external antenna you can replace ZyAir 100 card with Zcom XI-300 (not XI-300B which is the same as ZyAir 100) or Proxim RangeLan-DS 8434-05 (not 8433-05 which is the same as XI-300B). These cards have snap-on antenna when removed exposes two RP-MMCX connectors. You can hook the antenna to these MMCX connectors.

However, instead of going this expense you can simply buy a better client card such as Orinoco Gold/Silver.

I have my P316 in front of the house at lower level at really bad spot (my cell phone stops working in that room). The buildin antenna allows coverage in the whole house (3500+ sqft) and about 200ft away outside of the house in the front section. I have somewhat weak coverage in the backyard but that is through multiple walls and multi-path reflections.

I actually did hook the external omni antenna but it was not as successful as I wished. Instea,d I am thinking of moving P316 to a better location in the house.
