| reply to robertjpi It will not show up in safe mode. I've had this problem for months and haven't found a way to stop it. I think Outlook creates this file (may be wrong) and I think it's a corrupt registry entry that causes it or something is corrupted in Outlook. I now have two Perflib_Perfdata files that can't be deleted.

ZupePremium,MVM join:2001-11-29 New York, NY | reply to robertjpi According to the original link, it's created by System Monitor, not Outlook. you might try playing around with the settings on System Monitor to see if there's a way to set it to delete (to get there, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Performance). If you go to file, options on that screen and click the disk cleanup tab, there's a delete files option you might try, though I've never used it. -- Pinky: I think so Brain, but shouldn't the bat boy be wearing a cape? |

| reply to robertjpi Why are you running System Monitor at all?
System Monitor is something you run when you feel like monitoring something -- e.g., what's my pagefault rate? You can configure it to run automatically, e.g., from the task scheduler, but you have to explicitly do so. There's nothing active normally and nothing to do any logging.
So something does not seem right.
I'd try running Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com and using it to determine who has the file open. (There might be better tools, but that's the one I have got!) -- dave |

Ok, I read MS answer over and over, makes no sense but I will tell you how they want you to do it, Open notepad copy and paste this in it del /q %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdata*.dat now save as Test.bat on your desktop should be fine,Then do the following.
On the taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. In the console tree, expand Local Users and Groups, and click Users. Click the user account that you want. Click Action, and then click Properties. Click the Profile tab, and then type the path and file name of the script in Logon script. Click Apply, and then click OK Then reboot. -- TrojanHunter Stands For Privacy!!!!!!!

Well, I tried it and it didn't work for me. I saved the bat file in C:\Program Files and when I rebooted, the files were still there. It took a while to boot and when I opened C:\Documents and Settings\User name it had copied all the files from C:\Program Files to my User folder. It also copied some of the files in the User folder to C:\Program Files ????????????
Doesn't the script apply to the System32 folder and not C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Temp?

Re: Help Anyone know what this file is ( updated) OK
Try this, i WAS able to delete it. Go to Windows Task manager and Look for SNMP.EXE right click on the mouse and end process tree, after that program ends the TEMP folder is gone, the only way i can reboot and make the *.daty file not come back is by deleting the TEMP dir ....
What is SNMP.EXE ?, seems to be where the problem is.
Anyone ? |

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an Internet standard protocol for managing disparate network devices such as firewalls, computers, and routers. All versions of Windows except Windows ME provide an SNMP implementation, which is neither installed nor running by default in any version.
Just curious Robert....did you ever install Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-006 ?

But if you haven't determined what is creating it, it will be back. You can delete the one that's there, but then when you run whatever program creates it, it will create a new one.
If you think it's SNMP, then do you want to be running SNMP? If you don't, then turn the SNMP service off (computer management, services). [text was edited by author 2002-05-18 21:46:03] |
