| COX HSI problems, NOVA Only pease,
Our favorite "COX Fairfax: the worst isp in the nation?" has been moved to here. If you want to freely express yourself or yell at COX, do it there. It's all yours
This thread is for those Northern Virginians who have problems and want to politely and logically describe them. You can use your command programs or ping potter or whatever that might help describe your problems.
We can help each other but please, don't say, "relax and wait," "give it time," or "stop complaining," because that's not helping.:) Thx. |

LOL, hey we're in this together
(still on RR, still with good latency) |

| reply to COXnightmare Hey, nightmare. I think that this thread will also be a very long one like "COX Fairfax: The Worst ISP..." although I don't wish it to be that long I am still on RR too. But I'll try to post my tracert here too. Thx. |

| reply to COXnightmare Hi all.. this is my "first" attempt to start right.. LOL Here's my strange problem... it was bad first two weeks since transition on May 1... then it was good (lower ping.. good enough to play games online) last week although download speed was greatly reduced, but now I get better download speed and very high pings. PLEASE if anyone of those Cox people read this.. tell me why this happens, and do any Cox users get similar problem? |

| reply to COXnightmare Ok, here is my story. Since Feb, 2002, my ping skyrocketd to 500ms~5000ms. I talked to Cox support for over a month and they never found the problem. Then, somehow my upstream channel got changed to channel ID 2 and my problem solved. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, right at the time COX start to move to COX HSI, my ping went back to 500ms range again after an outage. I checked my upstream channel again, sure enough, my modem is on upstream channel 1 again. I called cox support and get transfered to tier 2 support and asked to switch the channel. The tier 2 support quickly switched it for me and my problem was solved again. Now, there is obviously another outage last weekend and my ping has gone back to 5000~10000 ms. Same issue. Called Cox tech support again twice. Only time the tier 2 supports have no idea what I was talking about (the upstream channel) and even their supervisor and the network technician don't know how to change the upstream channel and claim there is no such thing as upstream channel. Good work there, Cox:(
So, here I was, wasted a whole weekend with this useless connection. Finally I took the matter to my own hand. I dig out my cable signal attenuator bought from RS and connect it to my cable modem. Reduce the cable signal just enough so that it is right outside of the aceptable range for modem to sync. After a few tries and reboot of my modem, here I got locked into upstream channel 2 again! And best of all, my ping now back to 20 ~ 60 ms range. Obviously, the CMTS on Cox's side will automatically switch to another channel if the current channel failed to make a connection. My friend's modem is on Channel 4 and he's connection is rock solid in sub-20 ms range.
BTW, this only works if you have a modem that reports signal level to you (like Motorola series). For the folks who own Toshiba modem, it won't help as you have no way of knowing what channel or power level your modem is on. But again, from my experience, Toshiba modems especially the old non-USB version is less suspectable to this problem. |

I like "yahoo.com." |

| reply to COXnightmare Yahoo.com is a pretty good and steady site to ping. BTW, Cox's internal speed test site is speedtest.coxinet.net. This should be a more reliable way to tell your download speed.
My current average ping to yahoo.com is 20ms. Yesterday, I was about 2000ms.

| i have noticed something though. People from different parts of the county end up pinging different yahoo servers which means different routing. We should settle on one yahoo server.
When i ping www9.dcx.yahoo.com as of now 8:52 PM i get 30ms pings.
when i ping www.yahoo.com i get unstable pings between 100-1500ms with 10% packet loss. |

| reply to COXnightmare Starting day 5, no service... Ping times were fine (30 - 50ms). It's the constant 50-100% packet loss that's killed my connection. I'd gladly post an example, but I lost my DHCP lease yesterday and haven't been able to /renew.
Cox 'support' (lol!) says the downtime is because they are upgrading the network to support the transition from Roadrunner to Cox, and [insert random sound-byte of how great the digital network will be when it's done]... Um...
(*Tries hard to remain polite*)
Ok, we'll assume for a moment that I buy that excuse...
Why the heck were we switched from Roadrunner if the bloody network wasn't ready???
Anybody in the Herndon, VA area that hasn't made the conversion from Roadrunner yet? If so, how's your connection? |

| Conversion or not is not the problem. Cox had a outage last weekend in Herndon area. The backbond in Herndon area has not switched over to cox.net yet. And their DHCP server with RR seems cease to work. I get a lease time that is over 10 years. Cox was working in my community to lay down the fiber cables weeks ago but somehow they stop the process a week ago without finishing the job. I guess we won't see that digital upgrade anytime soon. |

That would be a routing loop. Two routers are not agreeing with each other as to the best path for a destination and instead are pointing at eachother. Also could be one router doesn't have the route at all, but has a default route to the neighbor. regards -V |
