DSL, Southwestern Bell & Frisco,TX (fiber to curb)

OK, so I have lived in Frisco for over 3 years now and about 6 months ago moved into a brand new subdivision on the West side ('The Trails of West Frisco'). At that time, Southwestern Bell told me that DSL was not available, but to keep checking with them.

So, I did. All the time. And I am still doing so - 6 months later - no DSL yet.

They say that there is fiber dropped into our neighborhood (there is an 'underground CO' fiber termination point about 150 yards away from my house) and that they don't offer DSL over Fiber yet. I have read enough to believe that FTTC with ADSL running over it is possible as long as the appropriate equipment is in place.

In fact, I hear that 'Project Pronto' is supposed to be SBC's effort at upgrading older FTTC locations to supporting DSL, correct?

So, my plea to anyone out there is :

•Does ANYONE in Frisco have DSL ? If so, IDSL, ADSL, what?
•Does any Southwestern Bell DSL tech have ANY estimate about when DSL will be provided in my area?
•This is a new neighborhood - did SBC just use old equipment that doesn't allow DSL over fiber, or are there other reasons to be concerned?

As an additional note - in Frisco, it seems as there is some sort of bandwidth limiter on the standard phone lines. I have lived in two different areas of town and have spoken with many people, none of whom can establish anything faster than a 26.8 modem connection over our standard voice lines. Note that this is still the case where I live now - WITH FIBER TO THE CURB! Any idea what's limiting the throughput?

Thanks in advance!

I could be wrong here, but I believe that the V.90 standard only allows for a single (1) A to D conversion between the user and the POP. Thats why folks on SLC or DLC can't get V.90 speeds.
Would someone please confirm or deny? Thanks

Yes, you are correct. You SIMPLY have service behind "pair gain technology" which limits you to 28.8 service.
That is why there is a fiber vault in your neighborhood as we speak....Look for the deployment of fiber fed DSL from SBC in the next few months.....Guaranteed.

Are you suggesting that Pronto is coming to the Dallas suburbs soon??

pronto will cover all of texas before it covers anything else, if you call up swbell(which i do NOT recommend since you will have to switch between know-nothings for an hour or two before you find somebody who actually knows what they are doing) you can maybe/eventually find out the dates of when they are doing work in your area..

of course they told us they were putting a remote dslam in right by our house in march, so we ordered a dsl line for when it was complete.. only to find out 2 weeks later that the date was wrong and it was supposed to be march 2003->that marks the 3rd time swbell has lied to us, and the other two times were not due to their mistakes, they just blatantly lied

No one lied to you. I haven't found 2 ILEC people who will give me the same story about anything. Sure, you've got the whole "who cares" and incompetence factor, hey, maybe they were all pissed at your attitude and decided to mess with you. That would be funny. You'll get your remote DSLAM, didn't they tell you that? March 2003, you've got it. What's your problem? I wouldn't take crap from a buttpirate either.

Wrong answer! Pronto will roll out 888 remote terminals THROUGHOUT the 13 SBC territory over the course of 2001. Here in the Ameritech region they've already rolled out 40+ RT and there are about 100 more tested and turned that are ready for retail sales.

For the record, SBC doesn't have to make Pronto information public. When you call up and harass people for estimates (which are often way off the mark) don't be surprised when they aren't right. When it become available you WILL be notified and no amount of calling is going to change SBC's business model. Pronto is a long term project and encapsulates a helluva more than just DSL.

With any luck you'll get the 'ol broadband black ball before spring of 2003. You've got my vote.
