What can I do Cox won't believe me?

Ok, i have posted before saying that I may be switching over to dsl because of packet loss, when i playing online games it is an impossiblity, this problem has been happening for 2 months now gaming is Really is why i got a high speed connection and i do occassional surfing on net. Anyway after reading many of the posts in the forums alot of people are having problems with packet loss and this can definitely be the cause of poor ,and I mean poor online gaming. Just got off the phone with a tech for the nth time , he has me go through the tests such as pinging my gateway, pinging other sites. He asks me my average time for pings i say about 17 to 20 ms. Which is good I agree. Shows 0% packet loss. Well thats fine and dandy but regardless of what that tests say i am still getting poor online gaming. My computer is fine has more memory than i need 768 RAM plenty powerful processor, the computer is not the problem, My speeds are good(downloads, uploads) even my pings are low in gaming, but i get that lag and unplug sign while playing and i mean everytime on every server. Did the line quality tests on dslreports tools and shows that indeed i am getting packet loss. Ran the tests several times and all show packet loss and the red face symbol saying fail. But the techs say that everything on their end that they can do as far as hardware wise is fine and perfect. And that this is occurring after it leaves cox and their excuse is that it is the servers that i visit. I can believe that one if it was just 1 or 2 of them. But all of them. Reading alot of the posts I believe i am having the same problem as you all, but i am not as computer literate as some of you and i have no knowledge to back anything of what i am saying to them. I feel so frustrated that i am thinking about swithching to southwestern bell dsl ,while may be slower so they say, at least my gaming (which i do mostly won't be interupted) I really want to give Cox a chance to resolve this, but if they claim that there is no problem then how are they going to resolve this. WOW feel better now that i have vented. I hope someone can shed some light for me on this matter, suggestions, advice, anything. Thanks for reading such a long post.

@cox.net

If the problem is chronic and long-term and Cox hasn't fixed the issue, you can always file a complaint with your state's Department of Consumer Protection and your city's Cable Advisory Council. Your city mayor's office should be able to point you in the right direction on how to do that.

it is definitely not your problem. they are lying to you by saying that as soon as you leave the gateway you aren't on their network anymore. do this, and show/tell a tech:
tracert support.cox.net it should show that you are getting from your computer to that site strictly on cox servers. then ping support.cox.net and you will notice the packet loss which comes in 2-3 second chunks once or twice per minute. MANY MANY ppl with cox are getting this exact problem, and it is definitely on cox's end. If i don't get results or a solid promise that they know what is happening and they will fix it within a week then i am going to file a complaint through the local govt. I think that if this happens in multiple locations then maybe cox will begin to realize the magnitude of the problem and fix whatever is wrong. it could be as simple as replacing one router, or it could be a major network design flaw, but whatever the problem i want it fixed now. i'm tired of the packet loss ruining my connection.

Its not that the techs at tier 1 don't believe you, its just that the higher ups in Cox like the SOC and the NOC are not giving them any info on the problem and if they are not gamers then they don't know what we are talking about.

Anon in CT

@cox.net

Ayup. I've been told as much by tier-2 techs - that NOC (tier-3) tends not to communicate with tier-2 terribly well. IMO, the only thing that will wake the Cox bureaucracy at this point will be those complaints filed with your town Cable Advisory Council and state's Department of Consumer Protection. If enough people complain, the offices will see that it's a problem and will light a fire under Cox to fix the issues.

Before 1040/275 +packet loss
After 1990/290 GAME ON!
I had the very same problem playing unreal tournament. Been playing online for about 10 months then all of the sudden in early march 2002 the packet loss was crazy as hell. I was so mad i almost dropped my cox phone service to get qwest DSL. Right before i canceled i asked them to come out and check my line or i was going to disconnect my phone and HSI to get DSL. All of the sudden then came right out and stopped giving me the run around. Turned out the frequency of my line was way out of wack. After they got that straight they also hooked me up with the latest modem they had on hand. 'Toshiba PCX2200'. Now my gaming has never been better. No more need to use them "lag skills". I still might drop their damn phone line to get DSL and run a game server on it:) BTW i had signed up here just to respond to you. Have them check your line frequency. It worked for me. Good luck.

Another thing, you've not shown us the results from your Line Quality tests - it would help to see just where your packet loss is taking place.

Hey would any of you Norman guys be interested in teaming up to talk to the better business Bureau, or maybe even writing a letter to the paper. Or we mite start by just all getting together and talking to cox as group. I mean this is crazy I cant even stream mp3s from one computer to another. And All it has to do it go out to the Cox router and bounce back.

That is what I wanted! It confirms the packet loss within the Cox domain, rather than somewhere else such as in Level3 or ATT.

I think the idea of taking it to the BBB is good in concept, but I don't think you're going to get relief through them. What you need to do is probably contact the Mayor's office (Norman Mayor? {sorry, just slipped out}) and ask if there is a specific part of the City gov't that handles complaints against the cable company there. You might end up having to step it up to the Cleveland County level.

Somewhere in the past, either the city or the county gave MultiMedia (wasn't that the original name for the cable TV side?) there permission to operate in a monopolistic manner. They will have followed on with the cable internet part of it.

Whoever did that, city or county, is going to be the one to carry the battle to. And in any battle like that, the larger the number of registered voters complaining, the better.

Save those LQ tests, VisualTrace results, ping test outputs (although they don't prove much unless you're pinging one of the points in the system that you can get to without going out of it).

Thanks 2kamaro, i thought i was going NUTS over here. i am wondering 2kamaro do you have cable or dsl. If you were in my shoes what would you do, Reporting this and having something resolved could take quite a long time. As i mentioned before i am about to jump ship and head over to dsl. Me not knowing anything about cable or dsl or computers for that matter have a one more question. If i do get dsl will I be passing through the same routers or route that i did in cable or is it a completely different deal. If it does ,may i encounter the same problems. Boy do i feel stupid : ) Thanks again

I live in Norman and am having the SAME problem!! Cox tier 2 told me yesterday to send them tracerts and web sites i was having prob w/. I tried to explain to the dude that web pages are fine and pings are sweet but major packet loss and get the "plug o death" every min for about 10 sec's on every server {quake 3} that i play on. He said my tracerts looked sweet and that there was nothing wrong!!!!!!!!!! Tier 1 told me to gripe about it because he was having the same prob and they wont even tell him what the prob is. I will join anybody who wants to write a letter or what ever, but this shit has gone way to long for me Going on 3 months now. I got cable to play q3 and i cant do that. If i just want to surf and check mail 56k is fine for me.

Ok got off the phone from a tech again, I finally got a tech to say that there is a problem. While he still contends that it has nothing to do with Cox , he did say there were routing issues, which sounds pretty contradictory if you ask me. He said that they are not finished upgrading systems etc. (heard this before) and that by June 30 is the scheduled and he did emphasize scheduled time of full upgrade and even after saying that he said that 90 % of the problems will go away. 90% , what is that, I pay those guys money for 100% satisfaction not 90%. Boy i tell you what getting that dsl is starting to sound real good to me. I am trying to give Cox a chance because my download and upload speeds are good most of the time, but again i like to play online games alot. Don't know if Cox is worth all this frustration.

The BBB has no teeth to do anything substantial, so you'd probably be better served by complaining to your state's Department of Consumer Protection and your city's Cable Advisory Council, since DPUC offices don't handle the cable 'net access end of things.

NUT, I have CoxHSI up in OKC - actually SW side almost in Moore. I really cannot complain that badly about the service here. There was a significant packet loss for a long time for me, but it seems to have been resolved. Now I'm doing a small battle to get some nearby equipment dealt with that suddenly seems to have developed a hatred for the rain (after storms this weekend and of last weekend, started getting disconnects as if signal strength had gone down again - but has been alright for about last 26 hours - but have a truck scheduled for tomorrow).

You'll have to check in the Bell forum to see how SWBell DSL is in the Norman area, I haven't kept up with it (and I'm too far from CO to get it anyhow, even if I wanted it). I'm not sure how SWBell is routing out of here. You definitely won't see the same 10.x.x.x or 68.x.x.x IPs in your path - those are unique to Cox. Now, as to whether you'll hit same points elsewhere is anyone's guess. Sooner or later almost everyone gets on to Level3, UUNET, AT&T and a couple of others headed into the backbone.

NUT: for all practical purposes, Cable and DSL connection would be two separate animals, and they each come with their own set of problems. Again, check the SWBell forum and see if you can get any feel for the service in Norman.

If you elect to "fight city hall" - yes, expect a prolonged battle. These problems aren't easy to find, nor to fix in many cases. Cox is dealing with a whole new deck of cards since October and with the addition of the RR customers to the game, it is one hell of a mess for all concerned (and I do mean for Cox and the customers).

Now - about that Tech's comments to stickpin: You stated that the packet loss is at the game servers, and those are (most likely) way outside of the CoxHSI domain - so to Cox, your connection is "sweet" - you've got to figure out what the problem is in setup somewhere that's causing it. First stop I'd recommend is our Gaming Tech Info forum and see if anyone there has any advice to offer - sorry, not a gamer, so I don't.
