XP/4060 Problem

I've gone thru this: »/forum/remark%···start=23

but still:
After every reboot of the system, the efficient logo in the systray has a red circle with a slash thru it. The only way to get that to go away is to go online via a dailup connection (and for some reason this enables the usb dsl modem).

1. I GO ONLINE VIA DIALUP
2. I GO OFFLINE
3. I GO INTO MY COMPUTER--NETWORK CONNECTIONS
4. I I DISABLE LOCAL AREA CONNECTION 3
5. I ENABLE Local Area Connection 3
6. I GO ONLINE VIA DSL

I have also had to reinstall the drivers every few days. I am using the latest drivers from support.efficient.com

Thats because the 4060 is a piece of junk. I had that modem for almost a year and it was not stable with windows me and even worse when I upgraded to windows xp pro. I finally shelled out $200 plus and got the speedstream 5660. The main problem with the 4060 is that its usb and it is software driven so therefore it is not very stable. especially with xp. Even when it did work it would very often drop the connection or do exactly what happened to you. Get a 5260 or newer and make sure that it is not usb. Most of them use an ethernet card which works much, much better. If you got the 4060 from Southwestern Bell and you have had it less than 1 year I think they might exchange it for a better one. I waited too long and had to buy a new one. It will make your dsl life a lot better.

I agree with paulwsmith, that's why we stopped installing 4060's, too much trouble. We are using efficient 5360's now, good modem, need to install nic card but worth the price, $99 now. SATASI

if you have had the modem over 90 days then you are SOL. you will have to purchase a new modem - and satasi where do you get the 5360 for $99 (just curious)?

That's the new price guideline they sent us last month on all modems.

I could not remember how long you had to have it to trade it in. My big mistake was answering yes to the question from the swb rep asking me if I had usb. I really wish I had never had that 4060 although it was good for a little target practice.

If SwBell doesn't give you a new modem for free, whine and moan for a little while and tell them you are going to go the cable route.

If that doesn't work, buy the modem.

I ordered one last week as a replacement for my 5260, I thought the price was a mistake! Searched the web for other prices, $150.00 to 175.00, Wow, SWBell, thanks.

USB modem? Well, I for one wouldn't use one either.
I suppose if the ONLY thing you have on your USB port is
the DSL, then it "might" work ok, but add a USB mouse, printer, or ESPECIALLY a camera and you will exceed the
bandwith limit of the usb port and since it's a shared
bandwith, it will disconnect the "session" between the
USB port and the DSL modem. I guess that's what happens
anyway
I had a friend on a USB cable modem and she was getting
knocked off anytime she printed, or used her USB camera.
I got a NIC, hooked a CAT5 cable to her cable modem and
it's rock solid stable when she prints and uses the camera now.
