| reply to kg4evv Re: Installment of InsightBB???
Well hopefully they have trained are techs locally on this. In the past this level of service wasn't really offered. Tech came in used the stupid @HOME install disc made sure all was up & running of course. The line also got installed. But as for email setup or a run through of anything else. You were on your own. So good to see that in at least 1 area they have improved upon the install process. Hopefully my area is now following the above steps. I can see where it would be more time consuming. But definitely more beneficial to the customer. -- *IGGYZ* *TeamZ* |

| reply to Zrpm said by SSIrocZ: Does anyone know what kind of cable exactly that insight will drop from the tap to the building? I realize that it is most likely rg6, but what kind, brand, etc? The reason I ask is because this is an easy job, and I'm going to do it myself, but I need to know exactly what kind of cable they use. I'm talking about the outdoor coax that even has that extra 'string'/'strand' on the cable, which is used to tie off/secure the cable upon reaching your house. I've looked all over and found a million different kinds of cable, but I just want to be sure. Thanks!
The cable we run from the tap (if Ariel from pole) will be RG6 with "Messenger Wire" (Extra line for securing the cable to clamps) if it is underground it must be "Underground cable that is flooded with a special water resistant solution. If the distance from the "TAP" is over 200' it should be RG11. I would recommend that you let Insight run the drop. You should not be charged as a customer for it if it needs replaced. Here in the Noblesville/Kokomo/Anderson/Lafayette area we now have strict standards for our Install/Techs to use Thread protectors and silicon grease on all outside fittings. Also unless you have experience in using compression fittings for RG6 I would let the installer do it. You would not believe the large number of fittings that I have run into that people have crimped or screwed on incorrectly. Crimped and the screw on type fittings are not good to use anyway. Also there are specific codes that must be met on both the Ariel drop measurement over driveways, roads, pools, etc. The drop must be properly grounded and can not trespass on other utilities so there are certain rules that must be followed. The number one thing with cable fittings are to prep the cable correctly with the proper length of center conductor, the proper cut length of shielding, and upon inserting the cable into the fitting make sure that the dielectric (white part covering the center conductor) is flush with the inside center of the fitting it goes into. We do not charge to replace RG59 for our customers and will install the outlet for you but we do NOT do wall fish. We can come from the crawl space or outside wall only. You would have to do the wall fish yourself or hire a contractor approx $60 or so. Another benefit of letting the cable techs run your cable is they will replace those cheap splitters and should do a good signal check with a good meter such as a Wavetek brand to check for proper levels for both analog and digital signals. Hope that answered some of the questions I have seen in here. Though I work for Insight THE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE NOT NECESSARILY THOSE OF INSIGHT COMMUNICATIONS. |

| reply to Macbeth situation: i live in columbus, in. the tech came in, I had it sitting on the insightbb reg page, I typed in all of the above and he was gone in under five.
fact: i live in an apartment complex, it is wired with rg59 bulk. i just use the outlet that came with the apartment, the apartment building won't mod the outlets, or upgrade to rg6, so I hope this doesn't happen to ya.
I have since installed a motorola drop amp (80 at bestbuy) in place of the outlet, and run monstercable rg6 to the modem, (started out with a linksys USB/ETH (sucks)) now have a Toshiba PCX1100u. things are super steady, and I almost doubled my d's n u's from the linksys (not sure what the problem with the linksys was, I think maybe the sensitivity to noisy line, or perhaps operating mhz were a problem)
Never called insightbb about changing the modem, their reg. software (or even insightbb.com) can change everything once you have an acct# and password. Try saving the cash for the install, do it yourself, call them and tell them to forget sending a tech, you just want yer actt and pass, and that's that. I am amazed at how bad a rap insight gets, when if you are competent to some degree the automation in installing a cable modem is considered by me to be FULL ON PIMP. hope you save the 30-100 whatever they charge there to do the work man....hope this post helps anyone else.
Lesson: if you live in an apartment complex, and they won't install rg6 in place of the five hundred year old crunchy dirty fiberglass infected rg59, install a drop amp and who cares if the neighbors get bleed over, let insight hammer that out on their own time. works out for everyone if your neighbors are already annoying. :P

A self-install kit isn't too difficult to setup. Then again, a customer put the NIC card in the floppy drive and wondered why it didn't work. |

| reply to AJICQ499087 This may be different in other systems, but here in Louisville, KY, this is how it works...
The cable tech will run the cable from the tap, or check the existing cable to make sure it is in good repair. They will install a ground block (a splitter which houses a tuned circuit to cut back on feedback from the TV's which can interfere with the upstream to the cable modem). They will run the cable inside your house to wherever you want the cable modem to sit. If the place that you want the modem to be causes the tech to have to wall fish cable through a wall or something of that nature, they will advise you of an additional fee. They will set up the modem, plug it in, and get that modem in sync. Soon a data tech will show up and sit down at the computer and insure your IE and OE are versions 5.5 or later and they will insure the computer has a working NIC or USB port for the modem. They will insure the computer is pulling a 10.14.x.x or 10.15.x.x IP which will allow them to register your computer on the SAS Registration site (12.223.2.8). After registration they will reboot your computer, and then browse to the help.insightbb.com website and there you will have complete picture by picture walk through on how to set up your e-mail, how to manage your accounts, etc..etc..etc..
Yes INSIGHTbb.com understands that many of you would rather have a self installation option, however, INSIGHTbb.com had tried that before when they where *cringe* @home. The problem INSIGHT ran into was that some people did not understand or where unable to follow directions. Many people did not have their PC's in good repair, such as an OS may have been loaded on a machine for 3 years and not once had the HDD been defrag' or any type of Windows clean up program applied. You can imagine I'm sure. -- Darin McCall mccall.d@insight-com.com Louisville Technical Resource Center for INSIGHTbb.com [text was edited by author 2002-06-22 09:27:23] |

I assume your the Macbeth from Floyd County, Indiana. When Insight offers cable modem service in new areas, I recall they offer free installation. I assume they will offer free installation for a month or two for Floyd County, Indiana.

| reply to Macbeth You can save yourself some money and just have them run the 1st outlet to a room. Then after they leave run the other outlets yourself.
However, there maybe one drawback. If you have a problem with one of the outlets that you ran yourself, they'll probably charge you a service fee. Most providers only accept responsibility for the outlets they installed. Normally the service if would be the normally price of a install fee. |

| reply to Macbeth said by Macbeth: I know there needs to be a cable ran from my street to my house, but is that included in the intsallation??
Yes, normally the drop is included in the install. However, if the drop is over a certain footage there could be additional construction fees. As long as the footage is 100ft or under you should be ok. |
