Rogers' highest tier to be 3000/384

My Rogers connect was being flaky today, so I called tech support. While the tech was resolving my problem, I asked him about the recent caps, and he said that the speed has been reduced to 1500/192, and that the highest tier of service will be 3000/384, exactly what it used to be. This is horse shit if you ask me. At least make the upstream compete with Sympatico Ultra! He didn't know what the pricing will be, or if there will be monthly transfer caps. Bastard Rogers! Throttle everyone to the middle speed, then ask extra money to get back what you had before for years!

Oh I forgot to mention that he said the new tier will be launched sometime within the next month.

Yepper. I posted this somewhere b4. I don't see how you can raise the price once for a service then lower the quality and then raise the price again and expect people to use it.

How is this legal??

I don't see how the law can possibly allow a company to get away with this. The way Rogers is treating their customers is an outrage, and it seems as they really just don't gave 2 #%#!s about us.

How is it possible that Rogers can have the entire cable market cornered in a major city as large as Toronto!?

I don't have words to describe how pissed off all of this makes me. I'm literally baffled.

Yeah well the corporate mongrels at Rogers feel that the customer can be F!@#$% around with and still pay their bills. Well a lot of people won't. I for one cant stand the idea that they cut my service in half, still kept the price, and now will be introducing the same old service package that I've had for the past 2 years for more money. The CRTC should do something about its, and should force Rogers to let other ISP's use their cable to provide cabletv and internet services. The same happened to Bell a few years ago, when they were forced by the CRTC to open up their lines to competition. God damn monopolies, I can't stand them!

Exactly! I don't see how the CRTC is just sitting back and watching all of this unfold. Mabye none of them live in Toronto, or mabye they get free cable in a kick-back deal with old Teddy.

I'll be straight right here and right now. You all may have seen some of my posts inquiring about the general latency between cable and dsl. I have recently been considering staying with rogers as I have been fairly satisfied with my ping times.

If it turns out that DSL's pings will be higher....so be it...I am making it known that I am going to become an aDSL customer, regardless of whether or not it has good low latency or not. I'm not going to stand for this just on principle.

If the CRTC steps in and opens this market up, then I may come back to cable if I'm not satisfied with DSL. If Rogers offers a package of 4000/800 ... hell ... even 4000/600 .. I'll come back to them for an extra $10/month than I'm paying now....but as it stands, there's no way they will see one red cent from me until that happens. Who knows...mabye DSL will turn out to be better than Rogers ever was or will be. We shall see..and then I will have Ted to thank for turning me on to it.

It's been real Rogers...now the hard part...which DSL company to choose. AEI - IGS or back to Telus.

Yep, well I have been a cablemodem subscriber for 4 years now, first 2 years with Shaw (The best god damn internet on the planet), and the past 2 years with Rogers since they took over from Shaw. Since then, Rogers has now TWICE reduced the speeds, and increased the price by $5. How nice eh? And now the monthly caps are looming. Broadband is going to hell in this country. Canada was thought by many to have the best high speed internet options a few years ago, now its just a disgrace with what these ISP's are doing to their customers. At first they told you "Download all you want, its fast, its always on, don't take up your phone line" bullshit, now if you do that, they call you an abuser. In 2 years I have gone from a virtually uncapped cablemodem downstream of 10mbit and 1mbit upstream(with Shaw), to a piddly 1500/192kbps speed with Rogers. They should call it NarrowBand for christ sake! bleh, thats my 2 cents.

be careful what you wish for...most people pay a lot more for their phone service now than before..all thanks to the CRTC and competition.

I would rather have a choice, rather than no choice. Prices will go up regardless. I'm sick of Rogers and their tactics.

Shouldn't you guys wait for official word before freaking out? Rogers techs know squat about large-scale plans like this, but that certainly doesn't stop them from running their mouth. If it turns out as 3000/384, then yeah, freak out at that point because that would be a joke. I'd be willing to bet that it'll be more like 5000/640, however. Despite what you think about Rogers, they are not stupid enough to pull this kind of move and then come in with a crappier package than Sympatico.

You're right Travis, time will tell. I just spoke with a Roger's tech and he said that there is nothing in the works as of yet as to whether they will even bring out a faster service, muchless what the speed cap will be. He said that he's sure there are ideas being thrown around, but there is nothing in writing yet, everything right now is heresay.

That said, Rogers BETTER role out a faster package in order to keep me as a customer along with many other knowledgeable customers. Now the issue now will be, what will be the transfer limit set on this package? Another question I have, will they put customers sub'ing to this service on a seperate node in order to guarantee the full speed?

Again, this is all speculation at this point, but if Rogers knows what's good for them, they better come up with something and fast!

They won't be able to put these customers on a separate node. You're on the node that your neighbourhood works of of. With the advent of DOCSIS 1.1, they might be able to guarantee the higher level package people greater packet priority, but they can't do anything about the nodes.

I don't know about the nodes. I just know that my node was just recently combined with another, and capped. So i don't know how well the high speed plan would work on such a populated node with 100+ modems now. It was 50 modems before and I was getting a consistant 2200-2400 down and 365-375 up.

Physically, I really don't think they're combining nodes. They might be running more people off of one CMTS, but the nodes themselves they wouldn't be touching. Combining nodes would be going in the exact opposite direction of what they've been doing the past few years. It'd also be a lot of money and they'd physically have to go out and dig stuff up.

Well we can put two and two together and get 4. Well sometimes 5, depending on the math But logicaly he is right, but the term we are looking for is "bait and switch".

For those of you who have never heard of this, you bait someone with one thing ala service @3000/384(640), then down the road you change them to 1500/192 without informing the customer and charge more. I'm unsure if legaly tho this can be tested via the courts, but if it was with other consumable goods it would hold well.

travisc, I cannot speak for anyone else here, but I am still waiting for Rogers official word on their throttling back our bandwidth.

Yes I know, we have all at one time or another called Tech Support on this matter, only to be told that the:
quote:
...modem throttle to 1.5 MB per second .... is a part of the evolution of our service.
However, from is my experience, a Company's Tech or Customer Service Dep't is never authorized to communicated changes in Corporate strategy to its Customer base. This type of communication always has to come from a senior executive authorized by the Company's Board of Directors to officially speak on their behalf.
But we are talking about Rogers Cable Inc. One never knows.

if you all got solid proof of rogers capping your speed and $5 increase in service then drag them to court. a $5 price hike suppose to give you even better service, not drop your cable to a 56k modem connection.

Well, I have solid proof on both accounts. But I would get laughed out of court, because Rogers' user agreement & policy is about 100 pages long and includes every possible clause to protect their own ass, and screw the customer. As for the proof, the new speed cap is listed on their website, and for the $5, its been on my bill the past 3 months. And what can I do? Absolutley jack.

As soon as you paid that extra $5, in the eyes of the law, you accepted the price increase.

As far as the speed issue goes, Rogers will maintain that their network integrity needs customers to be throttled. This is the best way, they'll argue, to ensure that the constant outages they were famous for, don't happen as often. I don't think a lawsuit would stand up in court because they do have a pretty airtight TOS, and they're still delivering service comparable to DSL in price and quality?.

BTW, does anybody know what happened with that class action lawsuit against Rogers over the constant outages they had when they were still with @Home?

If you don't like it, switch to dial-up.... there's a choice you know... Rogers pay per gig transferred to international backbones, so why shouldn't we?

Hahaha.... Screw Rogers, I don't give a hoot what they pay. I switched to broadband for a reason in 1998. Not about to switch back cuz of some lame provider's insane restrictions, after 4 years of having unrestricted access.
