| Don't order Router!!! You dont need it!!!
After spending hours with tech support with both Linksys and aol, no one knew how to shut the internal firewall of the router off. That means that nothing other then aol would work for either of my computers. What i did find out is that multiple screen names can use aol at once. This has to be your setup though: 1) Your comps must be connected to a hub/switch 2) the dsl modem must be connected to the uplink of the hub/switch 3)All your computers must connect to aol through the location "digital subscriber line". IF you have it set up this way as many SN of the same account can use the DSL |

| also, the router they give you isn't a regular ethernet router, Its designed to be an hpna router. (home phoneline network adapter) Which means your computers connect via phoneline. There is only one ethernet port on the entire router so you will need a hub anyway. And if you get a hub, then there is no need for the router. weird |

would this work with a wireless network? |

| In response to canigetaduma, -- The multiple screen name thing already works. AOL enabled this option for every user of aol broadband about a month ago. However in order to use it, all screen names on the same account MUST connect via Home - DSL. If one screen name dials up or connects any other way, multiple screen names won't work.
In response to tekpc2k2, -- You don't need the router. All you have to do is have a standard network set up. Have your Networking cards connected to a hub/switch, and the dsl connected to the uplink port of the hub. I don't see why a wireless network wouldn't work, but im not positive because ive never seen a wireless network. |

actually teckpc2k2, You can skip the whole network thing, and just get the router and use phonline to access the dsl. However I would hold off because I don't know how good the phonline network is, and because AOL didn't know how to get anything other then aol to access the internet. Your bestbet though is to do the classic network setup |

CSManiac:
you keep saying hub/switch to use multiple SN. will a router do the same thing? also has this been tested on different OS? i have windows 2000 pro and was wondering if plugging in the dsl modem to the uplink will work as well. thanks. |

| reply to CSManiac I gave up on aol and went with Earthlink. They set up my entire network for 50 bucks and I didn't have to worry about anything. It was plug and go. AOL offered to give me two free months of the BYOA plan after I switched but found no need. take my advice ditch aol and the annoying pop ups. |

| Multiple Screen names and 6.0
My friend down the road has Earthlink, More expensive then aol plus, and less bandwidth. dontot - All you need is a hub, and NIC cards in every PC. It should work for all versions of aol as long as you are connecting through the location Home - DSL. Im using aol 6.0 right now with a program called Raspppoe. I still like 6.0 better because its a much better connection then the WAN adapter in 7.0. HOwever, when I connect through Raspppoe and 6.0 i don't use Home - dsl. So I can only have this computer on aol while im using raspppoe. If you can get the modem files off aol for 6.0 then you won't need raspppoe and you can use home - dsl. But its not available for all OS. |

You CAN sign on to aol with multiple SN if one is using Raspppoe, or a connection type other then Home - DSL. It wouldn't work with my proxy though. I don't know whats going on but the setup i said above should still work fine. |

| reply to CSManiac CONFUSED?!?!
lets use this scenario: - picked up a linksys 4 port hub from compusa - bought some cat 5 cable's - all 4 of the computers are working w/ ethernet cards - set one to be connected via DSL. set all the other 3 to be Home Network - DSL. - sign on to aol using master computer and the other 3 can login as DSL - Home. - OR if none of the computers are DSL - Home, set one of them to be DSL - Home and the others to be Home Network - DSL BUT from what i heard, this method does not work 100% because doing so, only the master computer will have internet access and the others w/ aol intranet?
i'm not sure if thats true or not. i just picked up from these posts and i'm wondering if this works.
dont worry, i didnt waste no money. i dont have these items yet. but as soon as i get a response i'm doing so. [text was edited by author 2002-07-06 14:11:37] |

Thanks for the help. I just ordered a encore 8 port switching hub and 3 10ft cat5 cables for $52 shipped. So i will be able to connect the dsl modem to the hub's uplink? and from there connect the other pcs to the hub? And only one of the PCs will be able to connect through AOL 6.0 using RASPPOE and the rest will have to use 7.0? Thanks again. |

| Im honestly not sure
In response to Sonic -- As long as all the computers are connected to the hub, and the dsl is connected through the uplink, there shouldn't be a need for a "master" computer. All the computers should be independent of one another and connect on there own.
In terms of using Raspppoe and 6.0, I'm not sure what the deal is. I thought that if one SN wasn't connected using Home - DSL, then only that SN can be on. BUT i was wrong. This computer is using aol 6.0 and raspppoe, and the one downstairs is connecting using aol 7.0 and Home - dsl. Two different screen names, same account. So as far as i know (and i could be wrong), all you have to do is connect your dsl to the uplink, and it should work with any configuration.
Also, CALL TECH SUPPORT, if one guy won't help you, call up again and speak to another. Cause it was tech support that told me i could set it up this way. |

It says that only one screen name per account can be used at a time. They are both set to HOME - DSL, both version 7.0, both have Broadband Blaster UI installed, setup goes like this, DSL LINE --> UPLINK ON HUB --> then the computers are connected to the hub. i can sign on one at a time but both cant be on at once. -- Beep Beep Beep Beep |

join:2002-07-05 Miami, FL | reply to CSManiac U need to call AOL to get that multiple screen name thing activated. The feature was just installed recently. U can have more than one SN on at the same time. Call DSL support and have them activate it for you. |
