 Anon | 5660 lockups - memory problem?I've just found a difference between my non-crashing 5260/5660 and a crashing 5260/5660.
The crashing ones seem to only have about half as much memory. This also explains why they can't downgrade - not enough memory to store the new image before flashing.
If this affects 'real' 5660s it would be reasonable grounds for a refund as they are clearly underspecced in this case. Efficient were trying to save money and cut the memory to the bone - they got away with it on 2.1.0 but 2.2.0 has a larger footprint and keeps running out of memory (probably as the NAPT tables increase in size dynamically).
Memory stats for a 5260/5660 without lockups:

damaged join:2000-12-25 Hallandale, FL | reply to Anon Hey I just thought of something that may act as a bandaid since the lockups probably come after the NAPT tables fill up, I am going to write a small script in crontab and have it removes the entries every once in awhile to free up memory. I'll let you know how it goes.

Anon | reply to MrCornell I know....
A ppp server? What for!!
There's also an igmp module in there... not worked out how to init that properly yet.
Plus the 64 entry NAPT limit is artificial... I crashed at about 10,000... |

i have had lockups in the past...i have even locked up bridge mode once or twice! so i don't think it has to do with the amount of memory i have in my router.
in other news, what is the GDB stub? -- I am honorable. It's the other guy who stood still in my crosshairs' fault! |

damaged join:2000-12-25 Hallandale, FL | GDB in linux is a debugger I imagine this is based on a unix kernel of somekind so It is probably a debugger. |

Thanks for the INFO... the upgrade worked great :) I like to know if I'm going to run into a memory problem or not... so, I would appreciate the password also
Question:
With NAPT enabled, is there anything else I need to worry about with regard to the firewall?
Any default settings with the 5660 that I need to worry about?
Thanks in advance |

Do you think putting the modem in bridge mode before downgrading would change the amount of free memory? [text was edited by author 2001-01-22 02:59:00] |

 | reply to Sixpack3 My two cents: Just as Tony states, it appears that some of the versions of the 5260's with the 5660 part numbers have a minimal memory configuration (mine is the one Tony refers to in the original post). On the bottom, my 5260/5660 has no revision number, but instead has a small "Made in Mexico" barcode sticker, which might be an indicator of less memory onboard. I have most of the problems discussed in this forum, namely "frequent lockups on large downloads" and "unable to downgrade from 2.2 firmware". I don't think the lockups are due to memory but are a bug in the 2.2 firmware. I do believe the downgrade problem is a memory issue though since I am seeing a "malloc" error in the tracelog whenever I try to apply firmware. Just to save you some time, if you are following the instructions and are unable to downgrade, you are probabaly memory constrained (using either telnet/firmware or ftp/put and getting "File cannot be downloaded" error message). I have tried in both bridge and router mode, and there isn't a significant difference in free memory. I have tried to disable DHCP, DNS, SNMP, RIP, etc., and still not enough free memory to apply firmware. I will post again if I can find a reasonable solution. Otherwise, if you have my revision of the 5260/5660, you may be stuck at the 2.2 firmware (no upgrade, no downgrade).
I would ask that people post their revision numbers for the 5260/5660's that can or can't be downgraded (this seems to be a good indicator of your 5260/5660 memory config). This will help us all understand our potential problems with this upgrade, and what our options are.
True 5660 or 5260/5660? What is your revision number? Firmware version? Frequent lockups on large downloads? Able to downgrade firmware? Other info you want to share?
Thanks, Randy Hardee |
