 | Peer to Peer Programs I was wondering if there is a fix for this but i use to be able to use peer to peer file sharing programs with no prob on a dial up modem but ever since i got road runner i can't any searches. All searches fail for kazaa. The only way i can search is if i log off and on real fast on kazaa. Doing that i can get one search off. I resume downloads fine jus no searches. I'm running XP if that helps. Can anyone please help. Thanks |

| I heard, through the grapevine, RR was blocking the P2P ports...how true that is, I don't know.
Is the XP firewall turned on? That might have something to do with it.
Good Luck

 | reply to Dunkan21 P2P works great here, If TW is doing something its really limited, because I never heard that one. Firewalls, etc can easily block communications with the P2P programs, a search usually requires setting or establishing several firewall rules. |

 | reply to Dunkan21 I have the same problem. Up until a month ago I had ADSL and never had trouble searching for anything using peer to peer programs. I switched to Roadrunner and now I have trouble with almost every file sharing program I try. I know for a fact its not a problem with my firewall or XP settings. I have posted many times with the details of the problems and still have not been able to come up with any answers. I eliminated everything and anything that could be the problem. The only thing I havent done is call roadrunner support and ask for help. We all know that would be a waste of time. The problem has to be with roadrunner, at least in my area which is Austin Texas. Now getting them to admit their up to something, well, good luck. |

For one, I hope you are using KaZaAlite, if you need KaZaA for some reason. the Real KaZaA has spyware, after all. Also, do you have the latest version of the program? That's the only way I get WinMX to work on me, by having the latest version.
I would also check XP's settings in ICF for the connection, just in case. Though it doesn't affect me, some have reported having it affect them.

 | if ur on a router, u might have to set ur ports to let the data go through....i have an SMC router and i have to make a virtual server w/ the port for like everything i do |

 | reply to Dunkan21 I tried to mess with my firewall setting, i disabled and still no searches, i then enabled and no searches also. Still curious as to why i can only search when i first log on. BTW if people are looking for kazza lite go to kazzalite.com (easy enough Web based searches work fine like audiogalaxy but they are down. Should i add firewall settings to kazaa? I contacted Time warner over net chat and the exact answer i got was "i dont know, is there anything else i can help you with" |

 | I dont know if this with help you Dunkan but I use the spy ware free iMesh and Gnucleus with almost no problems on roadrunner. Despite what others might say I know the problem has to be with roadrunner. I have no doubt they are some how blocking ports in my area. Im not the first person to have this problem here in Austin area. Apparently they have spread their test blocking of ports out as far as your area. If you know anyone else in the San Antonio area with similar problems please ask them to post here. For the longest time most roadrunner users thought the problems I was having were just with my computers configuration. I would be great full if more people who are having this problem would post in hopes we might get a straight answer out of roadrunner one way or the other. |
|
 | I also believe they are port blocking...I try to Play Unreal Tournament online with RR and during peak hours my pings are 500+.Road runner says there is no problem if I can connect to the internet |
|

| reply to jrbigdog Are you using the latest version of Kazaa? Grumpy I would explain to the people you speak with at RR that network connectivity is composed of two performance indicators, one being bandwidth and the other being latency. And then go on to explain how there are many other ISP's that will provide you with high bandwidth low latency connection that you need for an enjoyable broadband experience. | reply to Dunkan21 I posted a few days ago about this same issue, but no one seemed to believe me and the moderator moved the entire thread to another forum without considering it, saying it could not be a RR issue. Yet RR does indeed use some sort of filter in certain markets which restricts use of Kazaa, even though you can still connect at first. Searches don't work, downloads don't work, uploads don't work. Everything was fine until I saw RR scans of port 1214, then Kazaa suddenly became useless. I have read about this same issue on several other boards. It is the truth. Complain and don't stop until they give up this outrageous practice.
You can see the original thread at:

 | And by the way, using Grokster, iMesh, or Kazaa Lite does not help either. All three use the same network (fasttrack) and the same port (1214). This is a RoadRunner issue, NOT a software issue. THEY are breaking the program. |

 | reply to Dunkan21 Looks like its petition time. I myself plan on talking to a RR rep everyday until i get an answer i am pleased with instead of the i don't know. |

 | reply to Dunkan21 I got roadrunner yesterday after using dialup for many years. Same result. My programs quit working. Guess I'll go back to slow that works till they get dsl in my area. |
|
 | reply to Dunkan21 KaZaa usually works on 1214. Check that out. |
|
 | reply to Dunkan21 Ask your ISP directly if they block any ports or filter any traffic. Anything other than a straight answer seems like it would indicate that it was at least a possibility. There are ISP's that specifically commit to not blocking ports or doing filtering like that of any kind, ever. |

k @rr.com | reply to rrchallenged I have been using a gnutella client on San Antonio RR. I quit using it for a couple of weeks, but when I tried to run it yesterday, for a while it couldn't connect to anything. It seems to be working now though, I can bring up a few ultrapeers. |

 | reply to Grumpy13 Does RoadRunner take pains advertise "online gaming" in their commercials and marketing? I know Comcast does where I live. You might be able to threaten legal action for false advertising, if the product does not live up to RR's claims. |

 | reply to Dunkan21 Since they do not appear to be blocking it until they scan the port first, then there may be a VERY simple solution to this problem (other than changing to a reputable provider): block the IP or IP range(s) that they scan from using a firewall. That way, the port will always appear to be down (or it will appear that your computer is offline), and they won't block it.
Of course, this won't work once they wise up and always block the port, but this should work until they do. |

well, naturally, since AOL's strategy and aim have to be to lock in users |
