When I run a test on my download speed, I max out at 900 kps. Is there anything I can do to improve this performance?
I am using a Motorola 4200 SB modem Win98 SE, HP Pavillion 6360 388Mz machine.

Your system could be causing the bottleneck. But you should definitely check out the Tweaks page »/tweaks. Also there is a Tweaks forum »Broadband Tweaks . You can post your info over there and then let them have a shot at it.

First of all welcome to DSLR!

If you want to check up on some tweaks, check out the canadian forum -> shaw cable -> and look for a guy by the name of marvinmiller, he's got a website full of wicked tweaks that you can use to excellerate your connection speeds.

forget that... here's his website instead!

All the best, and enjoy your service as well.

It seems like when I turn off my firewall program
(Sygate Pro 5.0), my speed improves. Could this be just a coincidence?

I use SPFpro, too, and I haven't noticed a difference with it on or off. I have noticed that when the option of "Stealth Browsing" is selected in SPF, that sometimes my speed will increase. But I have really only noticed that in one app (Limewire).

Did you run the tweaks? Can you post some results?

Your Tweakable Settings:
Receive Window (RWIN): 8760
Window Scaling: off
Path MTU Discovery: OFF
RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: OFF
MSS requested: 1460
TTL: unknown
TTL remaining: 54

Notes and recommendations:
Turn on Selective Acks (FAQ #578)
Choose RWIN between 14600 and 37960 (FAQ #586)
download/use DRTCP .. (FAQ #578)
Read the tweak FAQ

Example 146000 byte download
Actual data bytes sent: 154760
Actual data packets: 106
Max packet sent (MTU): 1500
Max packet recd (MTU): 576
Retransmitted data packets: 6
sacks you sent:
pushed data pkts: 26
data transmit time: 11.940 secs
our max idletime: 3839.5 ms
transfer rate: 11950 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 95 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency: 94%

Notes and recommendations:
Upload packet less than your MTU (FAQ #1492)
Just a few re-transmissions seen (FAQ #705)
2+ second stall detected
test applet read too slowly
or RWIN much too small!

ICMP (ping) check
Target unpingable

Download DrTCP and follow all the recommended FAQs. Then post back here and see if that makes a difference.
