eDonkey Guide For ALL (REVISED)So much has happened with the Donkey I felt it was time to revise the guide. SETTING UP THE DONKEYFirst off you need to d/l the donkey Get it here: eDonkeyInstall the donkey, make sure to choose NOT to install UCMORE when prompted for install selection as seen in FIGURE 1. Next you should configure your donkey. Start up your donkey and click OPTIONS. Under User Name choose any name you like Under Max Download Speed (A) take your advertised broadband speed and divide it by 8 In other words if your advertised d/l speed is 768 your download speed for the donkey would be 768/8 which would equal 96 So A = 96 Your max upload speed (B) will automatically be established by the donkey after you fill in your d/l speed and close out of options. For 96 d/l you will probably get 10 u/l. Line Speed down (C) in my opinion should be set to the same as (A) so in this case it would be 96. Put Incoming Files and Put Temporary Files will have automatic defaults, you can change them to whatever you like but must do it before starting any downloads. Max Connections should be set between 2500 and 5000, try different combinations and see what you get. I usually keep mine at 4500. The only options which should be UNCHECKED in the top right are : Save corrupt files Verbose Now click ok and you done. SERVERSThe key to the donkey is to keep it well fed Here are two sites to update your servers: » ocbmaurice.dyns.net/pl/slist.pl» www.esel-paradies.de/Delete the existing servers in your donkey and update them with the links above. There is ADD ALL feature on both sites which will add all the available servers on that list. Other places to find servers and server utilities are : » www.thedonkeynetwork.com ··· k/tdn.pl» bse.doesntexist.org/» www.ed2kutils.de.vu/THE ALMIGHTY LINKSNow the donkey by itself is okay as a P2P but if you want to have the best P2P (IMHO) based on ease, file availability as well as knowing that you will get what you want and you want get fake or incomplete or stripped copies of whatever your d/l'ing (as you find on Kazaa and Winmx) then you have to combine the donkey with one of these linking sites: ShareReactor FileNexus Horror Sycamore Project (Lots of link sites) Nixed-HQHorror Ampster The Donga PussyProvider (for all your porno needs) º eDonkey Guide Exchanger Downloads CD Freaks SharecomUK AMED2K (for Asian Movies) WXP MrHussein's eDonkey StartseiteCityzenX Movielist CosmoED2KeDonkey2000 Movie PageeDonkey Links Black Sounds (for your rap album needs) More Music Links Divx Music Videos The Hardway Baraddur (TV Rips) Esellinks (games)Most of these sites also have very helpful forums and links to other sites which are also very helpful. FAIR WARNING Most of these sites are loaded with popups so get a popupstopper if you dont have one. My favorite popup stopper is Free Surfer. Very easy to use and can be set to different levels of strictness. Also prevents browser startpage hijacking and will even clear your temp, cache and cookies. Get Free Surfer HereESSENTIAL ADD-ONS Jigle-A search engine for the Donkey Invalid EDKLink Fix-With eDonkey version .61 you must d/l and install this fix in order to be able to use the links. The file is posted down below. Partview VII-Partview lets you to see the real filenames of all the files in your edonkey temp folder simultaneously. It lists the numbers of the part.met files against the original filenames as well as sizes, bytes transferred, format and part name. It will copy out and rename part files (one at a time) for previewing in a separate folder, when you select a file from the list and click on the "View" button. The file is posted below. eDonkey Bot-Check out TravisB's eDonkey Bot GuideRecovermet- "This is a tool for eDonkey2000 that re-creates x.part.met files that have been lost or set zero size after a crash. Obviously, this only works if the x.part file in your temp folder survives. Only those 9MB blocks will be saved which have been fully downloaded, but you'll be able to continue your download. The tool tries to find the best match from information stored." The file is posted below. Donkey Doctor- This tools intention is repairing part-files. The file is posted below. SOME TIPS**Visit the Sharereactor and Filenexus forums. You can request releases and will also find tons of stuff not shown on their main pages **You should defrag the drive where your temp d/l files from eDonkey reside. It will help the Donkey hash your files faster. eDonkey hashes files which allows it to recognize only genuine files and not just files which are falsely named. **Sometimes when d/l files you get to the very end and it will stop d/l. This can be very annoying. Heres the trick. You can do either of these: right click on the file, pause the d/l, wait a minute and then resume the d/l, or you can shut the donkey down and start it up again. **ALWAYS read the .info files. **Delete all servers which are inactive and use the Maurice Server listed above to get new ones. As I think of more I will continue to add. Also fell free to post anything I may have missed. Id like to give credit for some of the above info to Storm64007, XninjajuggaloX, BuzzB2K, IronWalker, Somebodeez, TKE 711, El Scorcho, Dumwaldo, xxnoelziexx and Araina. If I missed anyone I am sorry, not on purpose. Give these guys thumbs up. Again, feel free to post anything I have missed so we have one complete eDonkey guide. |

VERY good, Wildgod Don't forget stuff like ports, routers, firewalls have effect on your ID number and speed. eDonkey wants ports 4661 and 4662. You can test these ports here: » www.preinheimer.com/edon ··· test.cgiIn eDonkey, you can see what port it is using by typing "vo" (without the quotes) in the bottom area and hit "enter". If it's not using the one that you have open, change it by typing "port 466_" (fill in the last number) and hit "enter". Close eDonkey and start it again. To help get those ports open, you can try Analog X's Port Mapper here: » www.analogx.com/contents ··· work.htmAlso, Windows 98 is limited on how many connections it can handle. To help with that, check this out: » www.ntic.qc.ca/~fleduc/index.htmEven so - Windows 98 will crash if it makes too many connections. There are some commands you can give eDonkey if you're curious or bored In the bottom you can type: vu (enter) to view uploads vq (enter) view upload queue vp (enter) view connections to other clients Lastly - Don't expect to get blazing download speeds on rare files. Speed Registry tweak for eDonkey on Win 95/98/ME This is only a tweak for Windows 95/98/ME users, NOT FOR Windows 2000/XP users. This may help speed up your donkey. Create this key : [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP] "MaxConnections"="500" After this, reboot and you should be able to handle more users. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE back up your registry before you do this. Dont pm me telling my your pc crashed. This is advice from sharereactor at your own risk. If you dont know how to edit your registry then do a search in the Microsoft foums or create a new posting in there. You can cause serious damage to your pc if you mess up your registry, so be careful and do it exactly as stated aboveOr you can simply d/l the file listed above and use that to make the fix. (thanks to storm for finding this file) |

When using a link site such as Sharereactor, its important to remember some things. When a link is first released it can take some time to d/l. Some people (storm especially) recommend waiting a day or two until the file is well spread. Obviously if the file is well spread, then your d/l will kick into high gear. This is all up to the d/l'er, of course this is not in all cases but if you find your d/l going slow it could be due to the file being brand new. There are times when the file is well spread before hitting the Sharereactor pages. Dont blame the donkey if the d/l is slow at first. If there are only a few copies of the file available, then you will just have to wait till it spreads. Either wait a day or two and try then or just let it d/l at the slow pace. To help out the donkey community keep your newer files available for a little while longer so that everyone gets a chance at a quick download.
First time eDonkey users should try popular files to check their donkey settings. What do I mean by popular you ask? Well something that has been released within a week or two, not that day. Also check the file availability number. Anything higher than a five means good availability. |

i have adsl 576k with win xp how comes edonkey kills my connection when i set the max connections to 100? |

a couple more edonkey tips:
- try downloading at least a few files at the same time, i usually find that i rarely get more than 20 KB/sec on a single file (unless its hugely popular and well-spread), but if i have 4 or 5 files going at once, i can max out my connection. you'll have to wait a couple days, but when its finished you'll have a bunch of good stuff
- the u/l is best set to around 75% of your total upload speed. ie if you have a 128 u/l , 128/8 = 16 , 75% of 16 is 12 Kb/sec which is where i set my u/l. if you have 256 u/l, it should be set to 24 KB/sec. With these setting, it doesn't effect my d/l speed at all, and i am also able to websurf, etc, with no problems. if you have a high u/l speed, setting it with this rule can only help everyone out. |
|
|
to WildGod8
10 is better for 128 because you have to consider overhead, and 75% of your upload would rescrict how much you download pretty dramatically. |

i guess everyone has their own experience, but from what i've found , using 12 as my UL speed with a 128 connection doesnt hurt my d/l at all, i get good speed.
i guess the best advice would be adjusting it and see how high you can go before things slow down, after you have everything set up to get good d/l speeds |

Excellent guide, well done! I wish I'd had this when I started out. One addition that people might find useful is Clam's "sharereactorifier". This file makes it so that the home page inside the edonkey program is the Sharereactor home page. It makes things nice and easy. This html version can be edited to make the homepage any address you like. So, if your favorite edonkey site is somewhere else you can make that be the homepage instead. I've tested it on versions 59, 60, and 61 and it works great. Here's the link to Clam's page... » clamutils.cjb.net/[text was edited by author 2002-08-27 16:44:48] |

LOL! Edonkey isnt dead..it can never die as long as there are users which is in the millions and servers which is in the thousands. It doesnt matter if they stop making more revisions to the app....there hasnt been a revision in almost a year..what makes this any different? Also, check out donkeys web site..the posts say something very different on the main page. Anyways, the whole point is, it doesnt matter. [text was edited by author 2002-10-03 11:36:08] |

Hi guys. I just got my ADSL line last nite and I can't seem to get higher then 6kbps on donkey. My average speed on Kazza and normal web downloads are from 35kbps to near 40kbps. I'm on WinME and the only tweak I have done is cablenut, which i have set to ADSL-Normal settings. My ADSL is 512k (384dl/128ul). I've tried various settings on donkey but they are all the same and the files that I download are of high availability (according to sharereactor). BTW, I am from Malaysia. Any clues???
Thanks. |
