eDonkey and your Linksys Router can be Friends

Click for full size
Well, maybe they can be friends.

I am NOT by any means an expert when it comes to eDonkey or routers - please keep this in mind. Maybe there is someone here who actually knows what they are doing and they can help me out here.

They say on the eDonkey website that if you're behind a router, port 4662 is what you want. So this is what I did to get my ID number up:

Find out what your IP is.
Do this by:

In Windows 98
Go to "Start"
"Run"
Type "winipcfg" (without the quotes)
Click "ok"
A box will pop up.
Click on the little down arrow and highlight "Linksys blah blah blah"
Note your IP address.

In Windows XP (someone who actually has XP feel free to clarify this) -
Go to "Start"
"Run"
Type "cmd" (without the quotes)
At the dos prompt, type "ipconfig/all" (without the quotes)
Note your IP address.

Point your web browser to this address:

»192.168.1.1/index.htm
(add this to your "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" folder for future reference)

A box will pop up asking for user name and password.
Ignore the user name space.
In the password space, type in "admin" (without the quotes) if you haven't changed the default password (which for security purposes - you really should change that!)
Click "ok"

Click on the "Advanced" tab
Click on "Forwarding"

You should now see a page that looks like this (see screenshot)
Fill in like what you see in the picture.

Click "Apply" and then "Continue"

Click on the "Port Triggering" button.
Fill in what you see in the port triggering screenshot
Click "Apply"
Now for good measure, click "Apply" again on the Forwarding page.

Restart your computer.

Start eDonkey
(Refresh Your servers while you're at it)

Go here and see if port 4662 is now open
»www.preinheimer.com/edonkey/serv···test.cgi
(hopefully - it is!! If not, check your firewall settings)

At the bottom, type "vo" (without the quotes) hit "Enter" on your keyboard. Make sure eDonkey says Door port is 4662.
If it does, check your ID now. It should be a 10 digit number and if it is, you're done.

If eDonkey says Doorport is 4661, type "port 4662" (without the quotes)
Hit "Enter" on your keyboard.
Close eDonkey and restart it. Check your ID. Hopefully now it is a 10 digit number.

If you've done all of that and you're still having issues, remember these things:

Sometimes when you're connected to a server, that server will make you have a low ID. I don't know why.
Dis-connect from that one and connect to another one.

If you happen to lose electricity at your house or for whatever reason, you have to push the reset on the the router, you will most likely need to do this again.

Check the Linksys website and/or the guide at the top of this forum for more information.

Port Triggering Page

For some reason, my Port Triggering screenshot didn't show up so here it is.

Edit: oops! yes it did. I need to get my eyes checked.

I have a Linksys router and I did what you said but my ID is still only an 8 digit number! Why is this. I am still getting slow download speeds too

About the low ID:
Having a low ID just simply means that you can't connect to other users who also have low IDs.

I'm sorry - what I posted is about all I know about this.
The only other thing I can think of would be a firewall issue.
If you're on Windows XP - that has a firewall built into it and you might want to turn it off.
If you're behind another firewall, you need to tell it that it's ok for eDonkey can use port 4662.

About the Slow Speeds
Aside from getting your ID to a 10 digit number which would help, if you're trying to DL rare or old files, that's going to be slow going no matter what unless you get lucky and the person you're DL-ing from has a really fast upload speed. Try to download a really new, popular file (even if you really don't want it - you can always cancel it) and see what happens.

What will that site say if the port 4662 is open?

After clicking the test button, if your port is open, it will say
"success ... your id should be xxxxxxxxxx"
(x's being replaced by your actual ID number)

I'm really not sure...All I know is that a 10 digit number is ideal.

Ok I looked at the ids of some of those I was downloading from and they had really low ids, so it is confirmed that you can still connect to the low iders with a 9 digit id as well.
