| upgrading firmware on earthlink dsl ZYXEL P645M
i have tryed to reset the modem and telnet into but every time i try nothin happens it refuses connection. and i have read some review before that people have flashed there modem and upgraded firmware. if you have earthlink dsl and use a zyxel p645m modem and can telnet into please reply and tell me how. thnx |

i post that topic above i just figured out how to telnet into the modem. but i want to know where i can get some firmware upgrades. i have read some topics on here before that people upgraded there firmware please reply if you know where i can upgrade my firmware on zyxel p645m modem |

| how did you telnet into the modem? I tried 192.168.1.1 and 10.0.0.1 (which was my last Earthlink modem's IP address, oddly enough) and couldn't get a connection to enter a password. Please share.  |

|  You have to be on the same subnet as the IP address you are trying to Telnet to or it will never connect and only timeout.
For trying the 10.0.0.1 IP your NIC has to be set to 10.0.0.2 subnet 255.0.0.0 to connect.
For trying the 192.168.1.1 IP your NIC has to be set to 192.168.1.2 subnet 255.255.0.0 to connect.
Note: a reboot is required after setting an specific IP for your NIC (exception would be XP since it initializes TCP/IP differently).

Hey, Doc,
Gotta talk quick -- BSF is at the door.  Actually, I 've already tried both the correct subnets you mentioned before (waiting for 30 seconds or so with Win2K precludes rebooting, by the way). I still got nothing. Running Win2K on a laptop set to the aforementioned settings. 
I've read, in an older thread, that some ISPs are closing ports to telnet. Could this be the case on the 645 modem? If so, what would the open port for telnet be?

| k how i telnet into my modem first in your nic card set its static ip to 192.168.1.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0 then reset the modem put a pin or pen in the reset hole then open the modem and hold the reset button for 1minute. after that just type telnet 192.168.1.1 in start menu --> run. if that dont work try going online then try to telnet into 192.168.1.1 again. well thats what i did. | Does any one know where i can get firmware upgrades for my zyxel p645m modem |

The default password supplied is not the 1234 they quote, its given here

I called support after a hard reset and Earthlink tech sup couldnt tell encapsulation from a hole in the ground. Telnet in = void warranty....
They told me to use PPP with it set on Bridging in the main screen. In reality not bridging but with 1483 .... DOH.
I'm running 2.5 firmware and a new rom load, hitting 1290 down 320 up... linux rox The staff at zyxel are the best. After giving EL a chance to fix this, and not doing so, they sent me just what i needed and 5 minutes later, voila... THANKS zyxel, forget Mindlink or is it EarthSpring |

---After Loading Adsl f/w, you can press Switch Button at least 0.5 second.
System will resrote IP address and Submask , SMT password value to default value
(IP= 192.168.1.1, submask =255.255.255.0, password=1234 ). This Function just run 60 seconds
after Load Adsl f/w complete.
