naw, $100 or above for 3 Mbits is over priced $80 is a bargain. honestly I don't even know what you can do with a 3 Mbit connection that you can't with a 1.5 except wait a few minutes less when downloading large files. God forbid you wait 20 minutes instead of 10.

I agree, though I never experience any slow downs I think they need to garuntee atleast a certian speed and ping times. many people get 200+ ping times which is unacceptable.

Perhaps they need to upgrade the system in your neiborhood or split a node but they can't afford to do that if they don't have the money and offering services for cheaper then they can afford isn't going to help, especially when they are already in debt. |

I'm going to be talking to my editor monday to see about turning this into a feature story. I see your point but it's their network they can block whatever they want. Can they not? They don't have to garuntee that we can use any software or download anything we want. And it's up to us to decide if we want to use their service or not.

Is attbi throttling kazaa/grokster in Sacramento? I think so. I am not writing to try to debate this issue: I want to present my experience with this same problem (in Sacramento, using attbi cable) and I will leave it up to everyone else to draw their own conclusion.
To begin with, I was happily using Kazaa until about two-plus weeks ago, when I started getting download times that quickly diminished to practically nothing at all. I thought it was a virus, so I searched high-and-low for one to no avail. Next, I thought it was Kazaa itself. I uninstalled it and deleted all registry settings, files, and cookies associated with Kazaa -- just to be sure. I then downloaded and installed Kazaa again. I ended up with the same problem as before. I went through the same uninstall, delete, and download process again, but this time using Kazaa Lite as my installation choice... still the same problem!
I decided to investigate this problem online next. Typing in a variety of Kazaa related searches using Google, I was surprised not to find other people experiencing the same problem. I then got suspicious about my own connection, so I started searching using that criteria for answers: that is when I found this discussion. After reading everything posted, I decided to try my own experiment.
I went to »www.netzero.com and I downloaded the free connection software and set it up for my computer using a dial-up connection (phone modem). I disabled my LAN connection, logged onto NetZero, and then I started Kazaa. After I was connected, I put in a search for an audio file. Before long, I had a respectable list to choose from (while on attbi it was hit-and-miss if I got anything). I double-clicked on one of the results that had a large grouping. I checked on the "Traffic" button and found that my song downloaded with a range from 1.75 Kb/s up to 5.84 Kb/s, mostly staying at about 2.6 Kb/s until the file was completely downloaded.
I have two other friends in Sacramento, who are using attbi and Kazaa, and they are experiencing the same problem that I am (and I think most of you have). By considering the problem as a factor with incredible coincidence, and trying to use a process of elimination, I believe the problem is with attbi -- despite their protestations to the contrary! If I am wrong, then I apologize for steering anyone wrong -- and to attbi as well. If I am correct, then we all have a reason to be upset and attbi should hear about it from all of us. |

| Its there network and they can filter or drop whatever they
choose. Its your right not to accept that and go someplace
else. They are not a public utility and can do what they
want. Why does attbi drop netbios? because people enjoy
exploiting it. Drop the traffic and the problems go away.
Now you are talking about filesharing there could be
a large amount of bandwidth being sucked up because of it
in that area. So whats the answer? simple drop the traffic
and get rid of the problem, possibly fixing some other
problems. Is that the answer you want to hear? probably
not, but It just might be the truth. They have the right
to do what they want, its there network. If you don't like
it then go get another ISP that is not gonna care what you
do. But to them they see it as something causing problems,
so you get rid of the problem. This is just my guess and
by the way excellent way to test your theory with dialup.

Got next to nowhere with the complains either. The thing is I should be able to send files to a friend through an instant messenger tool should I not (in fairness AOL IM doesn't exhibit this behavior that I'm aware of)
I can't exactly go to PACBELL because I sit at the 18000 ft mark. Just out of DSL range according to them.

That's strange because if it was being throttled (like Kazaa is) it would still be able to send just be really really slow. Maybe it was your friends settings. |

From an ISP's POV...
If you worked for a broadband provider even a monopoly, or you read the fine print instead of the marketing bs, you'd know that the 5%, or usually 1% use over 90% of the bandwidth cause you can't live without your porn. We have in out three lines of fine print that we will limit your bandwidth if you start hogging it. Mostly because ISPs have to oversell to survive, much less make a profit.
Not that anybody can resell cable, but DSL is a losing situation for everbody. SBC charges us $35/month for a DSL line, plus we have bandwidth and other costs. SBC steals our cutomers before they can sign a contract and offers them $29.95/month for a higher download speed. Nobody makes any fricking money on broadband.
Cable in the area was down for awhile with the @Home thing and as many as they could bought DSL. In the beginning when they had too much bandwidth allocated to gain customers, it was great. Even three-fourths of employees here have cable, only two have DSL. If you have cable in any area where you have more than one user, you know it sucks. It's one giant LAN and insecure as WLANs. Why don't we kill Bush, put someone in office who can run the country. Stop unfair business practices from monopolies and get cheap bandwidth put in everywhere. Or you script-kiddies could all wakeup and deal with it. Here, look up cyrogenics, freeze yourself until bandwidth is unlimited and free and they have a cure for idiocy. |

As you know AT&T Broadband has been throttling traffic through port 1214. However, the new version of KaZaA; Version 2.0 allows you to change incoming ports. Which means, you can increase your speed and bypass the limit.
Download Kazaa Lite "http://www.k-lite.tk" After installing the program, start it.
On the tools menu, click options. Click on the firewall tab. where it says use port "1214" for incoming connections change it to port "21". Then clear the the check box next to use port 80 as alternative for incoming connections. Thats it... your good to go. You will most definitely see an increase in your download/upload speed.

Part of my small brain wonders if this isn't an attempt by the ISP's to avoid going to court like Verizon currently is. Basically, block 90% of us off from getting access to the P2P's used ports, which would then block off the spoofers/spyers, etc.. see where I'm going with this?
