Windows Free by Two Thousand Three

I been thinking and had an idea for a little campaign. Titled Windows Free by 2003.

The objective: Get as many people as possible having a distro running on their computer with all vital hardware working (scanner, soundcard, printer, moniter, modem, video card, etc.) by New Years Day 2003.

The method of achiving: I don't know how people want to do it or if they want to do it at all. Anyways I was thinking of pairing up a current Linux user that knows at least the basics with a new linux user. Rather than giving lots of RTFM answers and stuff, you guide your person and help them find the answers they seek, and teach them where to look for the answers on their own.

EDIT Seems people like the idea so here is the current list-

put me down as an user, knowing the basics, willing to teach one the basics of installing mdk8.2 and getting things working. I even have the scanner working! (took me quite some time):)

I'm very willing to get people started with Linux.

I need to download some Debian 3.0 disks for a curious friend who's settled on Debian for his first real Linux distro.

Here's a random irrelevant tip to the new users.. you never learn by doing it the right way. Or at least that's how it works for me

BTW Great idea, Techie2000.

As far as newbies go, sign up for whichever side you feel comfortable. If you feel you have enough knowledge to help another newbie get to where I described then sign up as a helper, otherwise sign up as a new user.

Put me down, new user. Even though I have Windows running still on one of my machines, my number one is Red Hat Linux with Fluxbox. I've got to thank my Linux Newbie Ambassador indiboi for giving me the most help getting everything working though. I nominate him for Mentor.

Techie2000's 12 step program for being Windows free. W.A., (Windaholics Anonymous).

You get a sponsor and they shall guide you to be Windows free.

Hi. My name is Fred, and I am a Windaholic:)

PS this is a good idea.

I guess I would be new user, as line command and roll your own kernels is not my strong suite.

Too funny. I was just about to post as a "recovering Windows user and part-time Linux evangelist."

I'll help anyone that I can, but I'm still on the steep part of the learning curve right now.

Hi. My name is Fred, and I am a Windaholic:)

"What time does the W.A. meeting start?"

"We don't like to use the word Start around here...

"Uh, okay, when does the meeting begin?"

"The meeting will begin precisely at 1029044105."

"Huh?"

"Just have a seat over here please."

put me up too, and I'll try as hard as i can to help people.

running MDK 8.2 as server, and on a other computer as client.
Not everything works perfect.(Things that don't work: scanner on the client; some services on the server).
But I guess I know the basics.

I wish I could be put down as both (hopefully I wouldn't get paired with myself). I've been using linux for years, but was recently unable to get RH 7.3 to install correctly and had to return to Mandrake 8.1. I've got printer sharing working over my LAN, but is was most hit and miss (to the windows machines).

The only problem I have with RTFM is that there are SO MANY manuals and so many pages. I admit having learned a lot while stumbling around looking for one specific answer, but sometimes I never find the manual/answer I start out looking for.
I recently compiled a kernel successfully (there's another area with a lot of variables). I don't know if it was optimal, but it works.

If there are no sub categories, I better be a newbie.

I have used linux for the last 4-5 years. Love it. Not really an expert. I have to read the manual all the time.

I think another good thing to do would be to state the distro, so the mentor can be matched up with the newbie in a way that the mentor has had experience with the distro..

Give me another 4 - 5 weeks and I'll be able to guide a Gentoo install with the best of them!
