How much will WEP slow down my network

I just installed a wireless router for tenants of my apt bldg to provide DSL. I'm only set at 384/256. How much speed will I lose with WEP activated? I have changed the SSID and default password, but this is in a relatively small town and I don't expect that there would be many hackers running around trying to steal my signal.

Throughput with WEP enabled is typically 2.5Mbps or more. You'll see no hit to your 384K line.

Here's some tests I ran when I got my wireless hardware:

The 3 tests (down/up):
wireless no wep: 4690/941 4729/943 4739/943
wireless 64-bit wep 2974/943 3046/943 3097/940
wired: 8436/945 8436/942 8533/943

As No Strings posted, if you're maxing out at lower then my WEP speeds, the odds are WEP isn't going to slow you down further. But let us know what you find.

It really depends on your router. I used to run a Linksys wireless router and I took a pretty big hit in performance when I enabled WEP. Close to 50%.

I have Cisco now and I don't take that much of a hit at all in the performance arena.

If you are concerned about LAN and WAN performance, then get high quality wireless equipment like Cisco.

Thanks guys, will do some testing before and after WEP to see what kind of results I get.

Our experience with Cisco gear is also good. We can see 4 Mbps and sometimes higher on a regular basis.

"Extreme Tech" did some detailed studies on WEP'S effect--their conclusion that WEP has only "a slight" effect". The entire article's summary is:
