Buy turning it off, anyone with a wireless card will not be able to search and find your SSID. |

got a good source for acronyms? ie. ssid = ? -- **Test running.**Speed 1254(down)/216(up) kbps (At least 24 times faster than a 56k modem) Finish. |

| reply to DeanDome Turning off SSID broadcast is not in complience with IEEE 802.11b and therefore might not work with client adapters of other manufacturer. My RG1100 will not communicate properly with my Compaq adapter when i tried this. Your results may vary, i would say if you have same brand clients then it would probably work. |

Yep - I found this out the hard way when my 3Com wireless NIC didn't work with my Linksys Wappy when the ESSID broadcast was disabled. But fortunately 3Com recently released a firmware and driver update that added active scanning, so now it does work.
FWIW, while disabling ESSID broadcast will stealth your AP against most client cards and some war driving tools like NetStumbler, it does not prevent your AP from being detected by wireless sniffers, such as AirSnort. Still, I recommend this as a basic security precaution. When used in conjunction with other basic features such as MAC address filtering and WEP, it will reduce your risk of being compromised. |

@rr.com | agreed, if you can use it then its another tool to prevent snoops. otherwise be sure to use WEP and MAC authentication as well as static IP's in a unique range. |
