Re: How to outline part of a picture in PSP OK, first off, the original is too hard to work with on its own, due to the fact that the curves are just to rough.
So we're just gonna have to nit pick before we give it a border.
Anyhow, you wanted something "step-by-step"
Go ahead and open a new window in PSP, and start around 600x600 (I like working with large spaces...just my thing hehe).
Then copy the original and paste as a new layer in your new window.
Should look something like this:

Go over to the Selections Tool and choose Rounded Rectangle:

Create a selection and start at the far top-right corner of your work area and drag out a selection (helps create a much larger curve in this fashion. There are other ways but this is mainly quick and dirty ).. Stop until you get a good portion of the picture around its curved corner area as shown:

Cool so far? No over to Selections and invert the selection (or Shift+Crtl+I if you like shortcut keys ).

And go ahead and press the delete key.
You should get something like this:

Good? Cool, mainly this was just to get a much nicer edge to begin with from the original.
Now for that border...once again, it's all quick and dirty
Go ahead and invert the selection once again.
Go on over to Selection, click modify, and select Expand

This mainly expands the current selection depending on how many pixels you set.
Let's try expanding it to 2 pixels and see how things work out

OK, from go ahead and create a raster layer by going to Layers >> New Raster Layer.
From here, you can give this layer a name. Usually I name some of my layers to avoid confusion as to what each layer contains. I named it as "Black Flood Fill" (Yep, you can guess what we're about to do next).

Now in your layers palette, drag the new layer below the image of the chain.

Now go to your flood fill tool, select the color black. Provided are the settings I used.

Make sure the new layer is selected and go ahead and flood fill the selected area. It should look something like this.

Yep, see where it's going?
Go ahead and deselect the project by going to Selections >> Select None

Go over , again, to Selections >> Merge >> Merge ALL (flatten)

And from there your entire project will be merged and with a white background. (Since there was no initial background, or background layer, it selects white as a default background once you fully merge (flat) a certain project).
Your image should look like this:

From here you can go on and use the Crop tool like I am doing in the picture below and simply crop it to whatever you desire.

Here, I cropped it out just for the heck of it.

And your final image will look like this

Here is just an example, perhaps a guide rather, of how it was done.
The border around the curves seems a little thick. If you want it thinner, you can just go back and play around with the settings a bit. For more curvish selection, try using the circle selection or elliptical...just play around Perhaps expanding it to one pixel instead of two pixels from where we started before may help you get the result of a thinner line. Anyhow, that's that. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2002-08-20 12:50:36] | |
| Likewise, I'm just here toying around with things.
I went back to doing it, expanding it with one pixel.
Just to let you know of how you can change things around...again, I'm just toying around -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2002-08-20 09:39:21] | | | Just Playing | | marcelle19crossPremium,MVM join:2002-03-02 Phelan, CA kudos:1 Reviews:

| reply to Meteor Dive Great PSP tut, MD. Needs to be added to the tut page. Will work for PS, too, BTW. Maybe somebody can do a bunch of screen grabs from that app to show it is bi-applicational. (Did I just coin a new phrase? ) -- Somebody set up us the bomb. | |
