Be truthful here ... it was really the mod on the left that was most appealing, right? correct?

I might as well contribute to this:

I first joined FAH but I didn't really contribute much and pretty much joined just for the spinner but I didn't think it was right to have the spinner and not really crunch.

So anyway after a while I was just looking to see what the teams did and I thought it was really great to help work toward a cure for cancer so I joined the Team since so many people in my family have died from cancer and also one of my best friend's mother has cancer.

I saw a sig line that said Team Discovery and something about cancer. It lured me in and found most of the threads so friendly. Plus I have a family vested interest in solving the cancer problem so I joined.

I've known a little for a long while and was always intimidated from the techy stuff involved in joining. The people here are great!

Main reason to join is to help others fight cancer and win like my brother and father!

I'm an old member, but I can still tell. I was already crunching UD, when a friend from work told me that dslreports.com had clubs that participate in Distributed Computing. Since I liked dslreports.com, I thought I'd join. So, to sum it up, word of mouth, and chance.
EDIT: I learned of UD from a verrrry small article in PCWORLD. A computer program in the search for the cure for cancer. I wanted to put my then all powerful 900 T-Bird to use. I was intrigued.

I've been a member for quite awhile but always in the background. I mostly visited the tech forums and security forum trying to get my computer up to snuff.

It just seems now where ever i turn someone i know or someone they know has cancer. Hopefully with ongoing research and distributing computing we can find a cure for this scourge of a disease.

That's why i joined. Sorry for the long post.

In the beginning (when I first stumbled upon DSL Reports) I just lurked, looking around, getting a feel for this place. Eventually, I noticed the spinner and wondered what it was about. Someone in one of the forums had a little spinner so I decided to check it out. When I read about Team Discovery I was very impressed with the team effort and wanted to contribute. I decided to join TD after doing some reading about "crunching".

I crunched (and still do on one PC) for Team Starfire (SETI@home) but like many others I felt like the results from medical research were much more immediately useful than searching for ET. I tried Folding and Genome for a bit, but found neither program terribly user friendly. Then I happened upon Team Discovery and UD. Then TSC came along and I decided that was the best for me!

How I found Team Discovery

I was curious about the spinners... went to the UD site and signed up... then realized DSLR had a team and joined TD. Parallel to that, I'd read an article about distributed processing and UD. It all fit together and provided me with a rationalization for leaving this machine on the 'Net 24/7. Prior to that, I would not do so as it was just too darn wasteful to do.

I am fortunate in not having any related medical conditions in my family but Crunching for a Cure for Cancer just seems like an intelligent thing to do with otherwise wasted CPU cycles.

Re: NEW MEMBERS PLEASE READ!

Saw the neat spinners over at Ameritech funhouse user's forum and figured out what it was for. When I saw what was being done here I couldn't wait to help. Great to be here.

I started out running SETI and ended up joining DSLR BBR Team Starfire. After a few months I looked at the other club teams out of curiosity and read up on Discovery. I joined because I felt it is a great cause and because my Mom had cancer. She has been cancer free for almost 7 years now.

I'm a new member

I figured this could help. Of course there are many other things that can help too like diet and exercise.

I also think it will make a pretty cool screen saver, and I'll get a spinner

Scratch the screen saver idea. Looks like it kills performance? I thought it would just have a full screen view of the current molecule, perhaps rotating.
