Alas, Ad-Aware won't prevent you from getting ads. What it does is detect(and try to remove) trojans written by legitimate companies who's purpose is to profile your preferences and also target ads to you based on your profile. (And make a buck off you selling your profile to third parties.)
To block ads from getting to you in the first place is another kettle of fish. |

| Just upgraded to Version 3.5h I don't know if the previous version was the culprit also as I just ran the new Ad-aware today. I upgraded and ran Ad-aware again and had 12 new onflow references and ZA asked if I wanted to allow Onflow Stup Installer and Onflow Player to connect to the Internet, well.......NO! The program appears to be working but when I reboot we will see. If it doesn't IOLO get's some mail. -- Quest for Knowledge

| I'm going to vote you up. I love the fact that you complain to the company about it. Most people don't, they just whine about it. The company might not listen, but after thousands of people are sending them email, they might open their ears more. Thanks! -- Please Help Me! My Recycle Bin is Messed Up! |

| reply to kkb OK, dumb and actually LAZY question. To upgrade to 4.5, do I have to down-load the FULL program, Remove the prior version (4.1?), and re-install the new version??
OR, I thought after 4.0 all I had to do was update the "Definitions" -- akin to what AV programs do. What is correct?

Also, for all you anti-spy-ware folks, don't forget www.spychecker.com. (NO, I have no financial connection, I just like their concept as well...). You click on their icon and a small window opens. You type in the name of the software in question and hit Check. The programs connects to the Spychecker website and runs through its database to see if any one has reported that particular program as Spyware. It makes a nice addition to Ad-aware. | reply to Rocktagon Grrr, another onflow victim I certainly don't remember giving permission for that to be loaded on my machine. I particularly don't like the fact that it leeches through IE thus rendering ZA blind to it.:(
It looks like the onflow servers are going to find a happy home in my special host table. |

| Ok flippant, teach us. Onflow servers in special host table? Is that security-restricted sites and the url entered? or something else. Might want to start a new post and lay out the details for us. | reply to R2 It is a stand alone program. The choice is yours as it will install along side previous versions. I left both on for comparison, but will uninstall 4.1 in a couple days when I am sure the new version is bug free. No problems yet, except Onflow:( |

I feel your pain, bluebaron. I can 'deal with' the teenagers; it's the 'grown-ups' that give me the most grief ...

| reply to Rxdoxx Rxdoxx, I use a "special" host table to block ads. It is quite simple, yet ingenious. Any ad server you don't want to access goes in your host table with a 127.0.0.0 corresponding address. We all know that the host table is used before the DNS, so the ad-server is found in my host table and of course no files are served from 127.0.0.0. It leaves a bunch of placeholders on my web pages, but I have gotten used to that.

It's best to delete the adware folder or run the uninstall applet, then install the new 4.5 Adware version. Then unzip the latest Reflist to the Adware folder. Hth.
BTW: I use Norton Internet Security to block most Ad's from my PC. Works well. NIS2001 2.55 Ad blocking. [text was edited by author 2001-02-03 20:34:04] |

| That's what I did (a complete re-install) -- but I thought after 4.0 or 4.1 that this was not going to be necessary. I thought only the definitions need to be updated. Oh well, it looks like most of us did a full re-install regardless! LOL. |
