Rogers and their brilliant telemarketers...

I just got a phonecall, long distance, from a Rogers representative, offering me Cable TV as well as Internet for half price for 2 months... When I told him that I already have both Cable TV and Internet, he barked off at me that it can't be true, because his computer shows otherwise. I laughed, and told him politely that we are Rogers customers since Shaw stopped servicing this area In December 2000. Again he barks off saying that Scarborough has been under Rogers for 5 years now. I just couldn't take it anymore and just hung up...

Where do they get these brainless, incompetent monkeys? How can their so called records be so inaccurate? This guy was very rude, insulting me with his tone of voice and saying that I was wrong, that I couldn't possibly have Rogers services because his computer says so... How nice eh?

Killing telemarketers

Not really about Rogers... but how to kill telemarketers without wasting time talking to them.

A month ago I got bombarded with calls from some telemarketer. I never bothered to pick up since I hate these people and I needed my sleep, (if it was important, they would leave a message) but they continued their calls. (at worst, every 30 minutes!)

I got mighty pissed... So, I figured out that if I put my answering machine to pick up on the second ring, (since their computer hanged up after three rings) their computer would connect a live operator to it, and finally they would give up on calling me. I put the ring signals to zero on all phones, and had my sleep.

Sure as hell, they continued... my answering machine picked up, their computer connected it to a live operator, they hanged up. The funny thing is that they had to pay a couple of cents for each call. (they called from somewhere in Alberta)

This continued for seven days... (~10-15 calls a day) then they took me off their calling list. It have been rather quiet since.

Why didn't I just pick up and asked them to take me off their list? 1) I don't want to talk to these jerks. 2) I wanted them to lose time AND money on calling me.

Telemarketing should be freakin illegal. Or they should at LEAST be required by law to show proper Caller ID information, showing that it is a call from a telemarketing firm. 95% of them that call my house have blocked or private numbers, or just numbers display with no names... Pisses me off... And especially Rogers with this ridiculous call!

There is a product called the Telezapper which intercepts these calls and tells the computer that your number is not in service! I think Zellers and Telephone Booth carry it.

I was once told by a telecom lady that some of these calls that doesn't show Caller ID info is made by companies who are doing their calls over VoIP. (Voice over IP) But I do agree with you... it should be illegal to do marketing without revealing who they are.

Yeah, I've seen the commercial for Telezapper, but I don't want to spend money on buying it.

On another note... a friend sent me this link the other week after I told him my story:

There's some good stuff there. Among them gadgets working much like the Telezapper.

Sorry for spamming, but here's a page with more detailed answer to the question why their phone number doesn't show up:

I just have a similar experience today. While I was eating my dinner, the phone rang. And, I picked it up and heard that a guy is calling from Rogers and advertise their super high speed service (Crap! 1.5 m only) I told him honestly that I am a roger hispeed interent user and I couldn't get the point why he called me? Within a sec after i said i am a roger user, he said bye and just hang up and indeed, i wanted to ask him some questions about rogers. But, he went....That Rogers' telemarketer was not polite, just hang up faster than I did....What the..(-_-)!

Y'know, when I did telemarketing *gasp*, and people did the Seinfeld trick, I'd give them my home number. If they really wanted to spend money on long distance to call me, I figured, go ahead! Nobody ever called. Guess I called their bluff.

Really guys, hang up on them. They want you to. The poor buggers in that sweatshop are scripted and listened to. They have to overcome your objections 3 times and ask you for the sale, either directly or assumptively. They have to. It's their job. If they don't, they'll get fired. And facing their loved ones with a pink slip is more humiliating than anything you can dish out. I personally tell these guys to get a new job, in a nice way. Y'know, something like, "I can tell you're a smart person. You can really do something which will pay you more." Blah, blah, blah. Look, if telemarketing didn't work, you wouldn't have all these people calling you. Unfortunately, it's the stiffs on the phone who take all the heat. If it really bothers you, call up the company they're representing and yell at them. Don't take it out on the the poor guys stuck on the phone at that moment who are making crap money and hoping you'll just hangup on them so they don't get yelled at.

I usually just ask them if they could hold for a sec, then put the phone in front of some nice elevator music for them to listen to for a while... a long long while.

I especially hate the ones that don't even let you say a word, just begin their routine "Hi I'm calling from Joe's Lawn Care and we are offering lawn services for half price YADDA YADDA YADDA for freakin 2 minutes before you can even say anything... If I don't hang up right away, I just say in a funny accent "me no speak english" and then hang up, lol...
