| Win2k SP3 CD install and McAfee problem The past thread 'Win2k SP3 Available' addressed SP3 installation from the Internet, but not installation from the CD. The CD I ordered arrived this week and installation today went fairly well, with one exception so far. I used the following steps:
-copyTCP settings in case they change (they didn't) -run backup (I use a tape drive) -run chkdisk -run SFC /scannow -build emergency repair disk -remove internet connection -stop running programs, incl. Kerio PF, McAfee (see below), Ati MMC, etc. -install SP3. Note directions are available on the CD -reboot as specified -defrag with Diskeeper -check for changes to the computer's behavior
I noticed the following good results (not exhaustive, I'm still checking): -Disk C master file table space is MUCH smaller. Perhaps there is a new algorithm that is less wasteful -Note that this is not true of D: -Outlook Express was not re-installed (I killed it in SP2) -My defaults for email and browser were saved
Unfortunately I also found that McAfee Vshield would not run. More precisely, manage/services claims it is running, once I set it to automatic and started it, but Virusscan claims it isn't loaded and then dies with a message when it tries to start it. I could not find this problem addressed on McAfee's web site, nor on Microsoft's.
Before I kill McAfee and buy Norton, the clear winner of polls here at DSL Reports, can anyone suggest a fix? Thanks in advance.

 | Try uninstalling McAfee, rebooting, then re-installing it. I had to do that with Matrox Video tools after the SP3 install killed them. Worked just fine after the deinstall/reinstall. |

 | Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I see no improvement after re-installing. I can scan OK, it appears, but vshield won't run.

 | reply to Kirby Smith One problem is that 'avsynmgr.exe' is stopped. Attempting to start it leads to a complaint that a module can't be found. Unfortunately, it is unclear whose module that is, Microsoft's or McAfee's.

| reply to Kirby Smith Well, Norton Antivirus 2002 installation was a disaster. Trying to register led to a BSOD, something about an unexpected kernel mode trap. Skipping registration and going into the configuration menu didn't help, it BSOD'd too. Eventually, I got a blue screen as soon after I logged in as it took for Norton to do something on its own.
Worse, besides wasting a lot of time, Norton won't easily uninstall. I had to go into safe mode to stop the services and stop the autostarting programs. Even then, after rebooting, I can't uninstall the program. Yech!

kzeoc join:2001-04-05 Findlay, OH | Have you contaced McAfee tech support yet? I have Win2000 Sp2 and McAfee 4.5. Would like to know how SP3 works with this version. |
|
 | reply to Kirby Smith When I looked on Sunday, I didn't see an obvious way to contact them, unless one is registered with the latest version. My version, 5.21, is already a freebie upgrade from a previous version.

I also posted this to the security forum thread, but please let us know which thread you want us to post to; and FYI, it's not a good idea to cross-post, since people can't follow the same thread in two different forums, LOL. :) |

 | reply to Kirby Smith I'll continue only in the Security Forum. The subject has become AV installation, rather than the Microsoft Win2k SP3 review it started as.
