| beware of 'kazaa gold'!
as an 'official mirror' (trust me it looks better on the embossed award they gave me...) of kazaa lite (»www.k4dwi.net/kazaa) i get e-mail on a pretty regular basis from users who either think i made the prog, need an older version, need help, etc. or just want my advice on the best p2p app i know of. yesterday one such user e-mailed asking if i'd heard of 'kazaa gold', and provided the URL, »www.kazaagold.com. i checked it out, replied that it looked like a scam, and nothing that is free to use should be paid for up front. this morning i got a reply saying that yes, indeed, it was a scam, and that the user had downloaded it with a fake e-mail (they ask for your e-mail before proceeding- an obvious marketing tactic) and info. this user sent me the executable, i unpacked it, to find all the files from the latest kazaa lite release, only with altered names... the KL exe is called 'kazaa gold for windows' yet the first screen you see says kazaa lite.
just a heads-up. naturally no one would automatically be inclined to pay for a free ride, but this site and app are likely to be seen again. one other thing: just to clear the confusion... the 'better download speeds' that any 'enhanced' version of kazaa claims are only as good as the two peers connection speeds. for example, i can only upload at 100Kb/s if i'm lucky on a typical day. getting the enhanced kazaa won't mean my upload to you will be faster. later. |
